Professional Looters Agree To Reduce Looting By 111 Billion Next Year

Yeah, because the only thing stopping me from looting right this minute is the massive number of policemen that stalk every street corner of London.

Oh wait, looting is going on right now in multiple London suburbs. Police seem incapable of stopping it. 99.99% of Londoners don't join in, and instead express disgust at the few who do.

It must be all those angry gods up there that stop the rest of us from looting, right? Why else would I, my wife and everybody I know restrain ourselves needlessly?

You´re proving my point. Police is incapable of preventing looting, therefore looting takes place. Nobody is stopping them, not even the allegedly 99.99% who oppose looting.

BTW, why are all the apocalypse fetishists obsessed with shiny metals? One would think they would stockpile good carbon steel, lead and gunpowder components...

You know, the things that would have value in a stateless society.

On the other hand, we're talking about people who think water sanitation will go to pot and food logistics will break down, but electricity and the Intertubes will somehow continue through the chaos as if nothing happened.

The police presense in Totenham hasn't changed much since the last lot of looting there - some 25 years ago.

Was your point that every quarter of a century young men with no stake in society will loot local shops?

...looting is what people will do if government is no longer capable of forcing them, at implied or actual gunpoint, to pay for their purchases

It sounds like you were asserting that government needs to suppress base human nature or we'll all fall into looting.

I don't buy that argument in the same way I don't buy the idea that gods are required to restrain our otherwise immoral selves.

Given who you may think I'm aligning myself with here, for the record I don't believe government is some unecessary evil that must be destroyed. I think we'd be worse off without it. On the other hand, I'd be happy with a whole lot less of it.
