She wants to beat Queen Vic. Vicky lasted 63 years 7 months in the job, having been only 18 when she came to the throne.

Tin Lizzy thus has to make it to about the end of 2015, when she'll be about 90 - she was 26 when she came to the throne, I think. It's perfectly doable. Charlie would only be about 68 by then.

Of course I don't see her abdicating when she gets to Victoria's record either, so it's a bit academic.

Also I can't see her abdicating before she's seriously debilitated, and she's looking pretty spry.

But remember, healthy-looking/spry people can keel over quite unexpectedly. For example, the founder of The Body Shop, Anita Roddick, died suddenly last September at the age of 64.

Having said that, I hope that HM does reign for several more years, and that if Charles does succeed her, he’ll put his money where his mouth is and fix up Buck House.

I do not see the Queen abdicating under any conditions. No English sovereign has ever abdicated for being too old. It is rare for even PMs to retire of their own free will. Plus as implied above she may not want her son to be King.

I do not understand why "100 months" is a key time frame, but on the issue of climate change, it seems as if Prince Charles listens to scientists and promotes the view backed by the overwhelming evidence, namely that global warming is real, it is largely caused by manmade greenhouse gas emissions, and we are in trouble unless we do something about it.

But on the issue of detox (and alternative medicine more generally), the Prince of Wales seems to ignore scientists. When Ernst and I wrote Trick or Treatment? Alternative Medicine on Trial, we dedicated it to HRH The Prince of Wales and pointed out that there is no reliable evidence in favour of detox and many forms of alternative medicine. Nevertheless, he continues to promote all sorts of odd and unproven remedies.

Instead of listening to his own voices, it would be better if Prince Charles began to listen to the scientific experts. After all, scientific expertise has to trump royal intuition. This view was most eloquently expressed by Professor Michael Baum, a cancer specialist at University College London who also had a spat with Prince Charles:

"The power of my authority comes with a knowledge built on 40 years of study and 25 years of active involvement in cancer research. Your power and authority rest on an accident of birth."

That would have been worse. Would he know when to stop? I like my Monarchy Constitutional, which means a figurehead rolling up for special occasions and tourist gigs. Bestowing "Royal" on worthy charities. Keeping the plebs mesmerised. Stuff like that. And not getting above themselves.

Otherwise things could get ugly, know what I mean? Swish, thunk. And nobody wants that. OK, not strictly nobody ...

Well, I have to admit, being an American has its benefits. We've never had an actual monarchy, much to the chagrin of Ted Kennedy.

Simon Singh makes an interesting point in that piece…

So why does Prince Charles listen to scientists in relation to climate change, but not listen to them in relation to alternative medicine? My suspicion is that he never really pays attention to any scientists and has no real understanding of how science works. Instead, he has a set of firm prejudices, and if the science backs up the prejudice then great, and if it does not then the science must be wrong.

…particularly when you consider what HRH had to say on the subject of prejudice earlier this year:

"In my humble opinion there's an awful lot of prejudice, an awful lot of preconceived ideas about everybody else's religions, or gods, or backgrounds or whatever.”

I'm led to understand that there's some apparatus carefully stored in a warehouse in Marseille since the late 70s that could come in useful should Charlie ever get too uppity. Don't think it would be too tricky to transport over and it'd do the job nicely.
