Prince Charles: 100 months to save the world

It's simply an attempt to appear relevant. It would be quite a feat if he pulls it off.

He's never managed to pull that off, so I doubt it'll happen this time.

I do not see the Queen abdicating under any conditions. No English sovereign has ever abdicated for being too old. It is rare for even PMs to retire of their own free will. Plus as implied above she may not want her son to be King.

The only condition I could see her abdicating under would be if she developed dementia-but, even then, she may not formally abdicate, but simply allow Charles to act as Regent. Otherwise, I doubt she would ever seriously entertain the idea of abdication. After all, her reign is founded on the abdication of Edward VIII-the concept of lifetime commitment and duty, and that abdication is a big no-no, is ingrained in HM.

I also agree that she would prefer to outlast Charles. She's a pragmatic and diplomatic woman - it's fairly obvious that she has little use for a nutter like him. Not to mention that he has publicly raked her through the coals as a mother, which had to have been humiliating and hurtful for her.

Inbred they may be, and some are nuttier than others, but the Queen - she's all right. It'll be a sad day when she goes.

Gawd bless 'er!

I agree with you on the abdication - there's some family trauma there, and two abdications in three generations would start to look like established precedent. The only other abdications that come to mind are Edward II and Richard II, both of which had to be "tidied up" without leaving marks. Best not go there ...

Regency doesn't have happy precedents either - Richard III, for instance. I think Queenie will soldier on, doing her duty as ever.

With her homoeopathic allium cepa right there in the royal handbag....

Rolfe.

True. But, at least, unlike Prince Charles, she has the sense to refrain from forcing her views about homeopathic medicine (or anything else) on the world at large.

Queenie has been exemplary in keeping her views to herself. When you consider the social revolution during her reign that's pretty remarkable. Never one side nor the other, despite great efforts by reactionaries to tease out an indiscretion.

Of course having Phil the Greek as a lightning-rod has helped :). If it's an indiscretion you're after Prince Philip's your man, but nobody takes him seriously. He married well. A step above pure accident of birth (he had to be eligible) but not a huge one. And he's the sort of guy you'd like to have a beer with anyway (he's paying).

Peter Fisher, leading light of the Faculty of Homoeopathy, is officially "Homoeopath to the Queen". An earlier incarnation of a poster almost exactly like Meow used to spam this and other forums with the line "THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND!! AND HER SON!!!"

I can't remember where I read that the Queen keeps a phial of allium cepa (homoeopathic onion, prescribed by the good Dr. Fisher) in her handbag to guard against colds and sniffles when she has speaking engagements, but I'll try to find it if you like.

It was Victoria who first fell for the homoeopathy line, but it seems to have been essentially hereditary since then. I don't know if the Queen Mum got infected after her marriage or if she was already a woo before that.

Rolfe.

You can't be a "leading light" when you're dimmer than a four watt bulb.

Not a glimmer of intellectual talent is there? terrible publicity for the hereditary principle.

In some ways he's a victim of that accident of birth. Born into normal society he could have lived an ordinary inoffensive plebeian life. As it is he's the butt of jokes.

But since he keeps on asking for it, who am I to deny myself the amusement?

Starting with cannabis in very clinical doses. Victoria didn't get into homeopathic theology : "homeopathic" and "herbal" meant much the same thing. Considering the practice of medicine in her time herbal remedies were a sensible choice. And 'erbal-tea three times a day kinda sways yer mind, yer know?

That would be Andrew and Edward - the "spare" and the "who ordered that?".

Where's that leave Princess Anne? (And what was that about a photographer whose greatest feat was making her look beautiful? Was that possible, and how much did he have to drink?)

In all honesty, isn't there something someone with some political muscle can do to oppose these "geniuses?" I can't help but think the damage they could wind up doing, over and above what they've already done, could be incalculable.

I think I've read somewhere that on overseas trips she takes along a little wooden case with a selection of about 30 remedies in case of emergency.

ETA: I haven't managed to find a reference to the wooden case, but:
Members of Britain’s Royal Family, including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, always travel with a homeopathic treatment kit

The Royals really don't matter, and they aren't allowed to matter. If Charlie-boy had never got into -opathies and -ologies, would the world of woo be substantially different? I don't think so.

Look what happened to Edward VIII. Step out of line and the response is ruthless. Swish, thunk, now you're the Governor of Bermuda - let that be a lesson to you.
