Presidential Primaries 2016

I always thought people who presented Christie as the great moderate hope for the GOP were kidding themselves--that kind of loudmouthed, tough-guy bravado just doesn't play outside of the tri-state area.

Well, I was right about Christie....

I'm getting real tired of the news media putting on every single Trump speech live. What's that fairness doctrine again?

Oh yeah, removed in 2011.

But this one: Equal-time rule Too bad they put this exception in it:
If the airing was within a documentary, bona fide news interview, scheduled newscast or an on-the-spot news event, the equal-time rule does not apply. Since 1983, political debates not hosted by the media station are considered "news events," and as a result, are not subject to the rule. Consequently, these debates may include only major-party candidates without having to offer air time to minor-party or independent candidates. Talk shows and other regular news programming from syndicators, such as Entertainment Tonight, are also declared exempt from the rule by the FCC on a case-by-case basis.[1]

It's seriously time to address this issue of all the free media coverage of Trump.

Just heard the radio recording of George endorsing Jeb. The first sentence really sort of freaked me out:

This is President George W. Bush.

Just hearing that again... <shiver>

But it had a happy ending.

Paid for by Jeb2016, Inc.

I wonder how much his brother got paid for doing that. I expect it is documented, since this is the official campaign organization. But it makes me wonder just how much PAC money can shuffle around to family members.

I saw a GW endorsing Bush commercial and I thought, what a bad idea.

The Republican field has only narrowed to five. Of course, if Kasich doesn't get more money soon he'll have to drop out before Super Tuesday. But that would still be four and if that doesn't narrow soon, you are headed for a contested primary. I don't know how many recall the disaster when the Democrats had a contested primary between Mondale and Kennedy.

Don't you mean Carter and Kennedy?
This is what I remember. It was 1984. Mondale was announced as getting the nomination. The applause was lackluster. One of the news reporters commented that there must be a lot of Kennedy supporters in the convention hall. Mondale tried to warm up the crowd to no avail. I remember the TV being split screen showing both Mondale at the podium waiting and live video of Kennedy's limousine. When you are the presidential nominee and sharing stage with a limousine, that's a problem. One of the reporters commented that Mondale's campaign had not wanted Kennedy to arrive right away because he wanted to have time to speak first. They commented that this had backfired because he now wanted Kennedy there. Kennedy finally arrived. Mondale acted like Kennedy was his long, lost friend, standing close and putting his arm around him. Ted on the other hand didn't smile and was stiff as a board. So, Kennedy's presence did little to increase enthusiasm in the hall. That's the worst presidential nomination that I can recall.

Kennedy didn't seriously run in 1984. It was mostly a three way primary race among Mondale, Gary Hart, and Jesse Jackson. It wasn't a contested convention, but as I recall Hart's speech did largely upstage Mondale. Of course, Mondale wasn't exactly Mr. Charisma so that didn't take much.

Nevada is looming. The "selected" polls at RCP are not telling the story and expect the Feel the Bern people to go a little crazy when the actual February polls show up this week. Local polling suggests it's a dead heat.

I see a Sanders win coming up.

Regardless of the actual sentiment in NV, the poll showing a tie was completely bogus.

I posted about it in the Bernie thread but a better discussion was on the Rachel Maddow Show tonight.

Bizarrely half the segment is being used to drive people to the web site of the people that commissioned the poll:
http://freebeacon.com/politics/rachel-maddow-free-beacon-nevada-polll/

Transcript excerpt:
RACHEL MADDOW: There just aren’t going to be a lot of polls, or any polls. Which is why everybody got very excited today when word broke that there was a new poll ... Bernie sanders tied with Hillary Clinton in Nevada at 45%. Wow, tied. That’s big news, maybe.

Here are some things you should probably know about this poll that nobody was expecting. The outfit that commissioned this poll is a very, very conservative website called the Washington Free Beacon. If you go to their online store, just for a little flavor here, you can buy, for example, Washington Free Beacon tactical vests.

You can also buy a walker that says ‘I stole this from Hillary.’ That’s nice. You can buy t-shirts that have pictures of George W. Bush on them that say ‘Greatest Living President, Fantastic Painter.’

That’s who paid for the poll. And the group who did the poll, it’s a group called Target Point. They are a Republican company. This is their client page on their website: Bush Chaney, RNC, the Republican Governor’s Association, Mitt Romney.

Also, Target Point has no real track record on public polling. One thing you look to see if a new poll you’ve never heard of to see if it’s legit, one thing you look at, you look at their methodology and their track record has been born out over the years. For Target Point, there’s no numbers over the years. There’s no public polling trail to follow. There’s just this poll. Just the one. Isn’t it kind of weird, if you think about it, that it’s only a Democratic poll?

I mean, it’s a conservative website hiring a Republican company to poll the Democratic race. Just the Democratic race? Not the Republican race that will happen many the same state three days later. Weird right?...

The Free Beacon, they told us, said they didn’t request a Republican poll. They didn’t want it. They only wanted Democratic numbers, which is interesting. So, why on earth would a far right conservative website have a Republican firm poll Nevada’s Democrats in a race that’s seen as impossible to poll? They couldn’t possibly be trying to influence that race, could they? Or trying to influence perceptions of that race? I don’t know.

The humorous thing about this NV poll is several things. The two places HRC fans continue to harp on. RCP, and 538 as the only reliable places for trends, and polling info. And harp about it constantly, they do!Both are using this poll!
Then there's the :mghissyfit over it affecting the NV race! The only effect I can see by claiming a tie, is to fire up HRC supporters!
So excuse me if all I see is...
