Presidential Primaries 2016

I was under the impression there was a Constitutional requirement that Presidents be native-born. And I didn't know that about George Romney or John McCain.

The phrase in Article II is "natural born citizen". G. Romney and John McCain were both natural born citizens.

Natural-born-citizen clause

The Constitution does not define the phrase natural-born citizen, and various opinions have been offered over time regarding its precise meaning. A 2011 Congressional Research Service report stated

The weight of legal and historical authority indicates that the term "natural born" citizen would mean a person who is entitled to U.S. citizenship "by birth" or "at birth", either by being born "in" the United States and under its jurisdiction, even those born to alien parents; by being born abroad to U.S. citizen-parents; or by being born in other situations meeting legal requirements for U.S. citizenship "at birth". Such term, however, would not include a person who was not a U.S. citizen by birth or at birth, and who was thus born an "alien" required to go through the legal process of "naturalization" to become a U.S. citizen.[1]

ETA: I believe that only one of the two parents need actually be a US citizen if the child is born abroad.

That's right. I think that the statute that governs this has a time limit (some large number of years) over which US citizen parents have been completely absent from the US that their children born abroad are not necessarily birthright citizens.

Huntsman and Roemer were the only two Republicans I liked in the last election cycle. Too bad neither of them made your list.
Corey Booker to run for Frank Lautenberg's New Jersey senate seat. Whoever wins the seat would have to run again in 2014, which might be a good thing because in 2016 they wouldn't have to worry about losing the Senate job.
It's a possibility, but then again, he's too busy being the Goddamn Batman.

Sen. McCaskill Books Her Ticket on the Hillary-2016 Train a Few Years Early

Proving once again that presidential politics operate on a completely different calendar than the rest of the world, Sen. Claire McCaskill on Tuesday endorsed Hillary Clinton for president 40 months before Americans will head to the polls to elect their next president. "It’s important that we start early, building a grassroots army from the ground up, and effectively using the tools of the Internet – all things that President Obama did so successfully – so that if Hillary does decide to run, we’ll be ready to help her win," she said in a statement offering her support for Ready For Hillary, a political action committee prepping for a potential Clinton campaign.

Clinton, of course, hasn't actually said she'll make her second run at the White House in 2016, but that hasn't stopped pundits and politicians inside the Beltway and out of it from declaring her the early front-runner for the Democratic nomination.

Polling is a bit sparse and probably doesn't mean much this early in cycle, but you can find the relevant polls here:
http://www.pollingreport.com/2016.htm

Hillary is the front-runner for the Dem nomination and in a head-to-head poll vs. Jeb Bush or Rand Paul.

McCain was born on a military base in Panama (i.e., U.S. soil). Cruz's case is a little more complicated than George Romney's on account of the fact that one of his parents was born in Cuba, but most Constitutional scholars agree he's eligible to run for president. The Tea Party movement has no qualms since there are more important issues -- like keeping the government's hands off their Social Security.

Some little bit of action today. A. Villaraigosa is going to run for governor of California and will most likely win, so I don't think he's 2016 presidential material. Check back in 2020.

Also this week, we're welcoming former governor of Utah and former presidential candidate John Huntsman. It was an oversight not having him on the list already.

H. Clinton
The local conservative talk radio guy was going ape over Democrats declaring that Clinton's nomination and/or election was "inevitable" and somehow Claire McCaskill is to blame or also sucks (or something).

Honestly, I have no idea what he was talking about.

I'm hearing some scuttlebutt out of Virginia that their governor is embroiled in some sort of brouhaha over charging personal expenses to the taxpayers - some kind of colonic detox treatment and pet vitamins, it is being reported. Not enough to take his name off the list yet, but will require some monitoring to see if it blows over.

Eeeeeyyyyyaaaaahhh! Howard Dean throws his hat halfway into the ring:

Howard Dean, the former Vermont governor who electrified anti-war liberals during the 2004 presidential race, said Thursday he would consider another run for the White House – a statement that will surely be met with mixed reaction in the Democratic Party.

Dean, whose underdog presidential campaign officially launched 10 years ago this weekend, said he has "mixed feelings" about running for office again but added he would consider another bid for the Democratic presidential nomination if he doesn't think the other candidates are adequately addressing progressive issues that are dear to his heart.

It's a complete nothingburger. Byzantine reimbursement rules paying for mouthwash, but not bodywash. It's a few hundred bucks, and no sane person cares.

Wow, that's a bit of a surprise. Veteran candidate of 2004, former governor of Vermont, former Chairman of the DNC, Dr. Howard Dean is making noises. See link in Brainster's post above.

Isn't that what got him in trouble the last time?

I'd like to clear up that myth (in case you were asking seriously). H. Dean's famously awkward woop yell came after losing unexpectedly in the Iowa Caucuses. His campaign for President was already flagging by then. Even without the wall-to-wall mockery that followed, there was little chance he was going to win in New Hampshire or take the nomination.

Don't entirely disagree here, but never underestimate the willingness of Granite State voters to upend the CW. Going into New Hampshire in 2008, Hillary Clinton looked like toast. Dean's scream eliminated the possibility of an upset, although he did manage a second place finish in NH.
