Presidential Primaries 2012

This might deserve it's own thread but Santorum just said that Abortions are to blame for the trouble with Social Security.

http://www.wmur.com/nh-primary-extended-coverage/27359182/detail.html

I wonder if he actually believes that or just figures if he says anything like "abortion bad - family values good" people will believe whatever else he says. Either way, yikes.
I just saw that.

Man, it's a great time to be a Republican. So many quality, deep thinking choices as presidential candidates :)

I'm not sure that it's possible to frothy mix to up the stupid any further than he already set it while in the Senate. This is a good effort, though.

Punter's odds that Huckabee will run: 45%
And yet polls put his as a frontrunner. I think he'll decide to run.
Odds are only 34% that Palin will run, but 77% that Bachmann will run.

Huckabee has been acting bizarre for someone who is making a serious run for presidency. He just does not seem to have the fire in the belly.
And I thinks polls and betting lines are their most inaccurate when trying to predict was a single individual will do.

Lincoln didn't go straight from the hill to the house though did he? Wasn't there a gap in between?

Yeah, about a 15 year gap. Lincoln won one term to the House from 1846 to 1848, did not win reelection, and I don't think held elective office, though he was active in politics, (the 1858 Senate run, which he lost) until he was elected President in 1860.

And whoever the GOP Prez candidate is, he might have a 1996 situation on his hands; he might be a moderate, but the GOPer in Congree have so poisoned the political situation that voters will be just plain scared to entrust the GOP with the entire Government.

So the news I'm seeing today is that Crazy Eyes (michelle bachman) is the current money leader. She terrifies me, not so much in a she could win way, but in a she might pull out a knife kind of way.

A Brief History of Primary Polling, Part II

The 1976 Democratic field is the one that reminds me the most of this year’s Republican one.

At this point in 1975, only 30% of the electorate knew who Jimmy Carter was, and he was polling only 1% for the nomination.

There's no really satisfying candidate among those with high name recognition, suggesting that the nominee may be someone who isn't a household name right now (Pawlenty or Daniels perhaps)

Has anyone here caucused for a sitting president when they seek the re-nomination of their party? I'd imagine it is a lonely and thoroughly dull affair.

I imagine that caucusing for G. Ford in '76 (against R. Reagan) or J. Carter in '80 (against E. Kennedy) had a little spice to the event.

If I can pull it off, I'm going to go caucus next year. Mostly just to see how dull it is, but partly to try again to get pro-scientific medicine considered as part of the county Democratic Platform.

G. Johnson will announce on April 21. I didn't see anything about an exploratory committee, but an announcement of an impending announcement is good enough for me to add the dot. http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2011/04/05/gary-johnson-knows-hell-be-labeled-pot-candidate

The big news is the former New Mexico governor's signature issue: Marijuana legalization.

A pot-smoking president? Probably not a bad thing. Now if he could get congress to inhale, maybe I'd vote for him.

With Exploratory Committee papers "prepared," I'll go ahead and give R. Paul le père a hollow dot, and cross out R. Paul le fils.

My alternative standard for a solid dot, in addition to entering race or formally forming explo cmte, is showing up for a debate.
