Presidential Primaries 2012

Don't underestimate this guy. He needs a strong tailwind like Reagan to get into office, but if it comes, he could be unstoppable. His problem is that he has to find a way to connect outside the Bible Belt. He's not likely to be my first choice in the GOP field in 2012, or even my second. But he's definitely worth keeping an eye on. He has enormous personal charm.
I knew Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan was a friend of mine ...

No, they cannot make him their candidate. They might make him their VP candidate to "energize the base" (i.e. get religious loons to turn out and vote) but if they did that, he'd be another Sarah Palin: they'd lose more votes than they'd win.

So, a non-Euro/woman Republican ticket would have the least appeal to non-Euros and women?

In this case, yes.

The GOP thought that the PUMAs were real, and that their airhead from Alaska would get their votes. They seemed not to grasp that Hillary was ahead on her merits as the candidate who best represented women's interests.

I don't know any women personally who thinks that the governor was at all near the policies that women need.

Steele and Piyush represent the needs of the black community just as well Allen Keyes. (Both of them are good reasons for black people to vote for anybody but them.)

I want a Palin/Steele ticket, or Jindal/Palin.

The party that best reaches out to non-Euro-Americans and women has the best chance of sealing the deal. They are a more identifiable voting block, and more numerous than the religious wacks.

Either P/S or J/P will keep them all firmly in the Democratic column.

After what Palin did to the McCain ticket, I can't imagine her being given another shot. And unless she does a whole lot of studying in the next 4 years, I doubt she will hold up under the bright lights of a long primary campaign. Now she has the reputation as a lightweight, the slightest mistake will make the nightly news. I'm not even sure that her family won't melt down before then. They also remain under the microscope now the country has gotten to know them.

Mark Twain once quipped:"Some times I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it."

A lot of people were asking themselves that when they first heard of Palin.

Had it only happened once, people might figure that she was just a Hail Mary pass that the GOP thought would work, for some unknowable, but probably good reason.

Now that she has had her own gluteals handed to her barbequed with a nice berbere rub, any attempt to run her again would look imbecilic

Has she started fund-raising yet? Where can I send the check?

I guess it's pretty much settled - Huntsman ain't running for prez.

I didn't know that Sen. John Ensign, the Promise Keeper who isn't so promising anymore, was a 2012 mentionable. But now that he's cheated on his wife, he's out. So he becomes our first to be struck upon being added.

I can't believe I drew up the initial list without including the governor of Mississippi, Haley Barbour.

Hutchinson has too many problems with the right wing of the party to stand a chance.

Not to mention people misspelling her name all the time. ;)

She may be on the moderate side, but she's still a more plausible candidate than almost the entire rest of the list. They swallowed hard and accepted McCain, so I don't think they'll choke on Hutchison. I guess it all depends on whether the sane wing manages to become ascendent over the next 3 years.

It really is kind of sad that only the Democrats and Republicans are the only party that really counts.

It's a complete false dichotomy

Every time I see 'J. Bush' on that list, I shudder. Not that Jeb is any worse than the others. He's probably better than most of them but...

Never again!

Are you sure "J. Bush" isn´t supposed to be Jenna?

Just think -- It was only 8 days ago that I (added and) struck Sen. Ensign. Now Gov. Sanford is going to join him in the fast building trash heap of the 2012 presidential election.
