President Trump

Then again, said 'super majority' only ever existed for 60 working days thanks to drawn out recounts and illnesses.

And added to that, there were at least two Democratic senators who basically had to be bribed into voting in favour of legislation such as the ACA.

Obviously I'm being sarcastic about the whole "went over well" thing. But it just occurs to me that rubbing victories into people's faces one... doesn't encourange debate on policies or merits and two... people need to have humility in that balance of power is not always going to sway ones way.

Me saying this is meant to be reassurance to some people fearful of Trumps policy ideas and to dull arrogance that a majority in the house means the winning side can do anything they want.

President Trump as Dirtbag

Despite President-elect Trump's self-serving tweets, the Trump University lawsuit seems to be a classic example of the kind of behavior that once led a Republican governor to call Trump "a dirtbag."

First, Trump was notified in 2005 by the New York State Attorney-General's office that the school was in violation of consumer protection laws. That the school could not call itself a university or imply that courses were accredited. The school also did not have proper licensing. Despite promising New York it would stop operating until corrections were made, the school continued to operate with no changes made. Finally in 2010, after repeated complaints from New York State, the school dropped 'University' from its title and made some other changes as well. Nonetheless, in 2013 the state filed a $40 million class action lawsuit against the school, claiming it was still essentially a bait-and-switch operation: that students were promised one thing and delivered something else.

Throughout Trump responded by publicly insulting state officials, calling them hacks looking for publicity, claimed one official had tried to shake him down for a campaign contribution (the complaint was investigated and dismissed) and sued at least one of the plaintiffs for "defamation." (That suit too was dismissed as being without merit.)

And as usual, as a business venture, the school was ultimately a failure.

Originally Trump's legal team asked the judge in the ongoing class action suits (the same judge Trump repeatedly and publicly labeled "a hater" and "a disgrace") to delay the opening of the trial until after the election. Two days after the election Trump's lawyers asked the judge to delay the trial again, this time until after the inauguration.

Trump’s attorneys said he will be too busy with the presidential transition to participate in the Nov. 28 trial involving his defunct real estate seminar program, Trump University. They asked that the trial be postponed until February or March, after he has taken office....Judge Curiel expressed concern about the wisdom of a delay given that Trump will assume the presidency Jan. 20. Curiel said he will probably issue a ruling by Monday [Nov. 22nd].

Trump attorney Daniel Petrocelli...told reporters that holding a trial during Trump’s presidency would be better than during the intensive transition period. News link

Judge Curiel also offered to facilitate a settlement by having a Federal District judge broker talks leading to an out-of-court settlement. This quickly led to Trump agreeing to pay $25 million to settle out of court. (I also wonder where the $25 million came from. Has Trump explained? Will we eventually find out it was money diverted from his charities or leftover campaign funds? Who knows.)

And our new president labels all of this a win? Governor Lowell Weiker was right: Trump is a dirtbag! ;)

The problem is, his actions seem to demonstrate so clearly this is a man with no ethics, no integrity, who values nothing except his own well-being. And now this man is our president? It's shameful.

A colleague told me yesterday, "Trump has been elected president. We all have to support him." I told him unless Trump changes his methods there is no way I can support him. Unlike Trump, I accept the system and accept that he was elected as our president. But I draw the line at supporting him. I supported Reagan, I supported both Bushs, despite voting against them. But at least they were mature men; Trump seems like someone suffering arrested-development, an adult who is in permanent adolescence. Very childish behavior.

What a way to start his presidency. By paying off to the tune of $25 million his former students who sued him for fraud. And he is so completely removed from the reality the rest of us live in he actually brags about it. This is a nightmare that isn't going to end for at least four years and I'm not supporting him.

When Pres. Trump goes home, prepare to pay...

An interesting, detailed account of the impact of a President Trump on Midtown Manhattan, especially if he plans to spend his weekends in Trump Tower, as he has said he expects:
...If so, his home, in the penthouse of Trump Tower, on W. 56th Street and Fifth Avenue, will be the epicenter of an iron curtain that will wall off much of Midtown from the rest of the city. Creating a permanent, sterile environment inside a 58-story, multi-occupancy building on one of the busiest streets in one of the busiest cities in the world poses an unprecedented challenge for the Secret Service and the military.

I mentioned before that the GOPers complained about the cost to taxpayers whenever the Obamas went anywhere. Those same people will be surprisingly silent about the unnecessary costs that the Trumps rack up when they fly back to NYC every weekend.

The story makes the point that the Obamas actually spent most of their time in Washington, unlike Reagan who flew back to Santa Barbara at the drop of a cowboy hat and G. Bush who spent weeks at a time at his "ranch" in Texas. And Trump is talking about "going home" every weekend.

This is something I have wondered about. As an Aussie, where often on election night when the change of Government becomes perfectly clear, we have a new Prime Minister (Federal) or a new Premier (State) the next day, who is empowered to actually, you know... Govern.

Norm

In effect, Australia does have an electoral college, which selects the Prime Minister. What's more, they can change their minds at any time up to the next election.

Look on the bright side, four-years from now Crooked Hillary will most likely run again, against Trump -- she can easily swindle odds-on favorite Anthony Weiner out of getting the 2020 Democrat nomination; the same way she and her gal-pals swindled Bernie.

I hope she does run again. It would be more than fitting that history remember her as a three-time loser.

Huh? I think you mis-spelled "well, the Parliament kinda sorta acts as an electoral college insofar as they vote for the P.M. but other than that it's not the least bit similar".

So is Trump win actually bad news for America's gun industry (as far as their profits are concerned)?

Just looked up the share price for Smith & Wesson, for example. Closing price on Tuesday, Nov. 8 (at market close before anyone had a hint that Trump was going to win) was $28.45, and it's at $24.13 as of Friday's close (down 15%). That's after bouncing back somewhat from the previous Friday where it was down as far as $21.24 (down 25%).

One of those weird ironies I guess. The people who profit the most from right-wing worries that someone is going to take away their guns will be most hurt economically by Trump winning.

Likewise, Sturm, Ruger & Co. is down to $53 from $64 before the election.

Can you share that **** you're smoking. Not going to happen except in your fevered dreams.
