I agree it would be silly if the beeb didn't play it, but it seems to be mainly tory MPs nad tory friendly papers demanding it isn't played as it might make people think that Thatcher wasn't the best thing since sliced bread.

Personally I hope the song reaches No.1 and is played often, even though I detest the film it came from.
 
I think they'll have shot themselves in the foot and made it an even bigger deal than it is.

There didn't need to be any mention of people's reasons for buying it, or what they might be associating it with - the charts are there simply to present factual information about the proportions in which songs are being purchased. Nothing else. And the popular ones - the ones more people are buying because they want to hear it - get played.

"Causing offense" can get you convicted of a crime in the UK, just ask the guy arrested for burning poppies on Remembrance Day:
Emdadur Choudhury, 26, a member of Muslims Against Crusades (MAC), was convicted of public disorder after burning two poppies during the two-minute silence on November 11 last year.

Judge Howard Riddle imposed the low fine despite saying Choudhury was guilty of a "calculated and deliberate insult to the dead and those who mourn them".

...The maximum punishment under Section 5 of the Public Order Act is a £1,000 fine for using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour that could cause harassment, alarm or distress.

You think that the relationship between Thatcher's death and this song's sudden rise up the chart is tenuous? Just a random spike in interest?

That said, play the song. Let the left continue their tantrum, it casts them in a fitting light.

That law is probably Thatcher's fault, just like everything else that's gone wrong in Britain since 1979.
 
This has to be one of the funniest things I've heard for ages, along with someone eating the president of France's camel. It is a perfectly British imbroglio - will they, won't they play it? I hope Sunday never comes and we can just go on endlessly discussing the delicious implications.

The BBC just had a brilliant interview with one of the Heads of the station. He claimed that he was disrespectful to the family and the song was distasteful. The interviewer pointed out that the radio station often plays songs are homophobic and sexist and disrespectful and distasteful to many people. He had no response but to say he didn't want to talk about it.
 
Oh, I get to deliver the news. They are going to play 5 seconds of the song accompanied by an explanation of why they aren't playing the whole thing. It's called a compromise.
 
Just had it pointed out to me that a couple of the papers arguing for press freedom during the recent levenson inquiry were calling for the song to be banned

Ha. They may as well just play the damn thing! Is 5 seconds and a full explanation really any better? And to be honest, if she were still here she'd probably find it funny anyway.
