Pope's state visit to the UK thread

He is. The Vatican is a state.

To quote Stalin: How many divisions does the Vatican have?

Vatican a state? The Eastend has more firepower (probably).

Of course his big boss could smite all foes. We'll see... :D

And were is the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics today? And where is the Vatican City State? :p

A citizen's arrest of this corrupt, conniving felon is clearly called for :)

I waiting for an awesome showdown between the Pope and the Queen as they use their magic to impress each other, the Pope will change all the water at the table to wine, the Queen will feed everyone with just 5 loaves (even she can't afford more than 5 loaves from the Duchy Originals range).

One of the Pope's senior advisers has pulled out of the papal visit to Britain, after reportedly saying the UK is a "Third World country" marked by "a new and aggressive atheism".
I'm still trying to puzzle out why atheism is apparently a sign of a Third World country; maybe only to the upside-down logic of the Roman Catholic church.

There was an Anglican priest on the radio this morning (who sounded pretty reasonable) saying that he wasn't sure why there was a big fuss being made about the Pope being about to meet a woman priest since the RCC doesn't officially recognise any of the clergy in the C. of E., up to and including the Archbishop of Canterbury, as priests.

I'm not sure that he was necessarily saying that it was linked; just that parts of Britain were like a Third World country, and that there is also a lot of atheism about. That's probably not too much different to what the average Daily Mail Comment piece would come up with (except that they would complain more about house prices; presumably a cardinal isn't bothered about such materialistic matters)

According to The Sun (that bastion of fair and accurate journalism), Kasper's secretary has clarified the "third world" statement, it's all the brown faces.
Cardinal Walter Kasper [..] a key figure in the Pope's inner circle - declared: "When you land at Heathrow, you think you are in a Third World land."

Last night the furore threatened to turn into a race row when the Cardinal's secretary Monsignor Oliver Lahl said the Third World outburst referred to the "many different people" who live in Britain.
Linky

I despair.

It seems Peter Tatchell has ruled out any disruption for this visit.

We'll have to wait for Mugabe to make a visit to Europe again for any of those shenanigans.

Presumably by extension that makes Roman Catholicism a Third-World religion, with all that implies?

When our Queen visits a foreign nation as head of state, huge trade fairs follow in her wake. She's a legitimate head of state because she functions as an ambassador for our nation. How does the Pope function as a head of state? What trade will his visit boost, apart from a short-lived increase in the sale of tacky souvenirs?

The fact that the Vatican is recognised as such is more down to diplomatic niceties than the realities of its position on the world stage. And if the head of a state like Liechtenstein or San Marino was caught covering up for child abusers and ordering subordinates not to co-operate with the investigating authorities, do you think we'd even let him or her in?

More bibles will be sold? :D

It seems to be keeping lots of journalists in work; I am off work sick today and the usual daytime TV nonsense seems to have been replaced by live coverage of the visit.
