I finally got around to upgrading my old Windows 7 laptop yesterday. The upgrade itself went okay, but preparing the machine for the upgrade took forever.
I uninstalled a ton of programs to free up disk space and avoid compatibility issues. This took far longer than it should have since I hadn't run the machine since November and everything was trying to update at once, slowing down my system considerably. (Note to self: Never leave a computer off for several months again.) I also deleted all of the data except for the picture I had set as my background. I only plan to use this machine as an emergency backup in case my new laptop should die and I can't get to a store to buy a new one immediately, so there's no need to keep anything on it. If I do need to use it, all of my data is on multiple backup disks and I can download new Windows 10-friendly versions of any programs I need.
Then, I went to run updates. After several attempts and far too much time, I finally got the thing fully updated. This whole process took about 8 hours.
After all that, the upgrade itself was as smooth as silk, albeit time-consuming. I opened the upgrade app, followed the instructions, and everything worked just fine. The process took about 2.5 hours. It was well past my bedtime at this point, so I just tweaked a few of the privacy settings, turned Cortana off, and shut it down. So, I should have a better idea of how well the upgrade is behaving itself next week after I've had time to adjust all of the settings, uninstall McAfee and download Avast, and update my browsers and anything else that needs updating. So far though, it looks just like my old system only Windows 10; everything seems to be just where I left it.
After I've got all the settings done and everything updated, I'll put the thing on a shelf and upgrade it about once a month so it'll be operational should I ever need it.
I certainly have a new appreciation for my new Windows 10 laptop after yesterday. Windows 7 felt clunky to use and I missed my touchscreen. I kept poking at the screen and wondering why nothing was happening.
