There are those who say federal funds badly needed for levee repair and maintenance were significantly reduced (or diverted) to pay for Bush's war in Iraq:Grammatron said:Certainly it's possible and we should review such things to be better prepared in the future.
However, I am curious what Presiden Bush did wrong?

I don't know enough about the situation to yet hold an opinion either way. But I'm sure Bush's top staff is meeting to discuss the biggest question of the day -- how can they blame this on Bill Clinton?![]()

The levees and pumping system are paid for by the federal gov't, and built and maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers. It may be fine in the future to say f.u. to Louisiana -- we're not paying to keep N.O. dry, but at the time it was the U.S. govt responsibility, Bush was cutting the funding for the Corps to continue its work.Grammatron said:That could be fair critisism, though it seems more like a state issue to me.
Was the Superdome built with city money? Because I bet for the same price they could have upgraded the levees.

The administration's budget slashed funding for two flood control projects in the Mississippi Delta, the Yazoo Pumps and the Big Sunflower River Dredging, from a combined $9 million in fiscal 2001-2002 to $565,000 for the 2002-2003 fiscal year, which begins July 1.
Environmentalists have termed both projects "boondoggles," while many Delta residents and farmers have called them vital for the region's future.
"It's a great day for taxpayers and the environment," said Louie Miller, legislative director for the Mississippi Sierra Club, one of the corps' fiercest critics in the state.
