I like to get a professional massage every once in awhile. My usual massage therapist moved out of the area so I'm looking in the phone book for a new one and spot an ad with the usual criteriia listed.....along with "canine & feline massage".

My first thought was woo....but I suppose massage for a cat/dog could help with orthopedic issues as with a human and it would be relaxing. I know my dog would NOT mind getting petted for 30 minutes straight at all.

I guess my question is...how prevalent is this? Genuine benefits for the animal or just another way for people to spoil their pampered pets. (I love my dogs--but no way they're getting a $55/hr massage.)

There appears to be a huge and growing segment of veterinary "woo". Shiatsu, acupuncture, massage, herbal remedies, organic dog food...you name it, you can buy it.

Yeah....but is veterinary massage woo or not? If I get a massage just to relax or because I have a sore back it's not woo.

It the massage therapist tells me it'll "detoxify" me and it "restores balance".....then it's woo.

I'm just picturing a cat on table getting a massage & wondering how this could NOT be woo.

Well, cats like being stroked. As do dogs.

Paying someone to stroke your pet for you says that you have too much money and not enough time, so why have a pet in the first place?

Actually, if I tried to pet my cat(s) for 30 minutes straight, they'd likely tell me (non-verbally) to sod off. My cats prefer to be petted / 'massaged' on their own terms. No way they'd put up with being subjected to a 30 minute manhandling by a stranger.

Good grief! That material is so gaudy, no wonder they have their eyes closed!

The eighties called, they want their throwover back...

I've been overseas for about 6 years... I don't make it to Bed Bath & Beyond much...

Cats I have known would not like to be around a stranger at all.
Simple solution is to give them a massage yourself. Cost nothing. Benefit you a lot. If that is not an option loan the pet to an old people's home for then to massage. Not all animals are suitable.
