Perry lets the terrorists win

The fact that he's "validating" the jihadists propaganda isn't all that alarming. The fact that he allows his religion to play such a major role in his foreign policy goals is alarming.

I think both are equally alarming, actually.

As is the fact that supporters of his party so relentlessly downplay Perry and Bachman's obvious religious-totalitarian intent.

Perry has let the terrorists win.

IMHO, there is no way this man should even be elected dog catcher.

Really?

Here's his comment.

... he was asked:
"To what extent do you view America's continued protection of Israel as a theological priority?"

He answered:
Well, obviously, Israel is our oldest and most stable democratic ally in that region. That is what this is about. I also as a Christian have a clear directive to support Israel. So from my perspective, it's pretty easy. Both as an American and as a Christian, I am going to stand with Israel.

I'm ok with that response. Someone tried to trap him in the question (eg the "theological" part). Would have have preferred him to duck and dodge the question?

Poor conservative politicians. :(

Always being "trapped" by pesky questions about their beliefs and policies. Why can't the lamestream media just leave them alone already?

Would have have preferred him to duck and dodge the question?

Here's how it would work if Rick Perry wasn't a religious zealot:

Question: "To what extent do you view America's continued protection of Israel as a theological priority?"

Response: "I don't. My personal beliefs aside, theology shouldn't have any role in shaping American foreign policy."

If our relationship with Israel ever drags us into a serious war, I think people who staunchly support our relationship with Israel need to fight it. I'll have no part of it.

Given that he not only got elected governor, but he got elected again, maybe you need to get a better grip on the American political process, JFrankA.

Put another way

Loony Tunes.

The above consideration makes the following, from over thirty years ago, funny only for people old enough to get most of the jokes.

The question is: would RP be laughing today?

OT: RIP, RP, you cracked a few of my ribs.

that is scary ****, for sure.
a christian zealot in the white house is a major threat to world peace.

I find your fear mongering pathetic and sad.

What is it with you: what made you so afraid?

Did you actually see the monsters under the bed when you were seven?

Do you feel this way about every ally the US has, or have you singled out Israel for special consideration?

What makes Israel so special?

The original "Special Relationship" was US/Great Britain.

That one makes sense.

The alleged "special relationship" with Israel ... not so much. The King of Saudi Arabia and OPEC in about 1973 fueled that fire when they chose to toss their weight/oil around.

The rest, as they say, is history. Without the 1973 oil embargo, CENTCOM would not exist.

Think About That, and ponder the permutations over the past thirty years.

So let the Arabs finish off what the Nazis started and everything will be A-OK?

It's not the fact that he's religious, it's that he relies on his religion when making policy decisions and crosses the line between church and state with no compunction.

ETA: I have no desire to live in a theocracy. And you wouldn't be so forgiving if Perry were a practicing Muslim and bringing that into his policies.

I'm not. Where did the "directive" come from?

Darth Rotor, Bob the Donkey hit the nail on the head. I know he's been elected governor twice, I'm not completely dim. ...mostly, yeah. Not completely. :D

If you read the article, Perry is making this issue, rather loudly and distinctly, about HIS religion versus "them" whereas Bush clearly and purposely steered clear of this being a religion thing.

So because he's a Christian he feels a spiritual obligation to support a country that isn't Christian? I applaud his application of Christian morality and look forward to his reaching out to Iran.

But the question he was asked was ABOUT the "theological", eg, he was asked a "religious question". Should he have followed his response with a legal disclaimer sort of like the one on TV cigarette adds?

In the absence of that ridiculousness, how would you think he should have answered the question?

Good point, however he does hang with a very bad and dangerous crowd of dominionists.
