Breaking news, the Pakistan Minorities minister, the only Christian in the government (if I heard the radio report correctly), has been gunned down. He had been previously threatened for trying to reform the blasphemy law.

The blasphemy law holds a death sentence for anyone who insults Islam, but Mr Bhatti said it had been used to persecute minority faiths.

"I was told that if I was to continue the campaign against the blasphemy law, I will be assassinated. I will be beheaded. But forces of violence, forces of extremism cannot harass me, cannot threaten me," he said.

ETA: Correction, he was the only Christian in the cabinet.

What a lovely country. I think I might book my next vacation there and take God Is Not Great with me.

Pakistani Minorities Minister killed, wanted to reform blasphemy laws

From the BBC:

Pakistani Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti has been shot dead by gunmen who ambushed his car in broad daylight in the capital, Islamabad.

He was travelling to work through a residential district when his vehicle was sprayed with bullets, police said.

Mr Bhatti, the cabinet's only Christian minister, had received death threats for urging reform to blasphemy laws.

In January, Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, who had also opposed the law, was shot dead by one of his bodyguards.

The blasphemy law carries a death sentence for anyone who insults Islam. Critics say it has been used to persecute minority faiths.
...
Tehrik-i-Taliban told BBC Urdu they carried out the attack.

"This man was a known blasphemer of the Prophet [Muhammad]," said the group's deputy spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan.
...
Christians, who make up an estimated 1.5% of Pakistan's 185 million population, were left reeling by Mr Bhatti's death.

"We have been orphaned today!" Rehman Masih, a Christian resident of Islamabad, told AP news agency. "Now who will fight for our rights?"

Pakistan's blasphemy law has been in the spotlight since a Christian, Asia Bibi, was sentenced to hang in Punjab last November.

She denies claims she insulted the Prophet Muhammad during a row with Muslim women villagers about sharing water.

Kill the blasphemer of Allah!

"This man was a known blasphemer of the Prophet [Muhammad]," said the group's deputy spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan.

"We will continue to target all those who speak against the law which punishes those who insult the prophet. Their fate will be the same."

This is how a true believer should act.

You must protect Allah from anyone who insults him.

I hope that Sharia Law comes to our neighborhoods ASAP.

More on this tragic event:

Taliban militants on Wednesday shot dead Pakistan's only Christian government minister for challenging a law that mandates the death penalty for insulting Islam, the latest sign of instability in a country where many fear radical Islam is becoming more mainstream.

Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti is the second senior official this year to be assassinated for opposing the blasphemy law. Provincial governor Salman Taseer was shot dead by his own bodyguard in January.

These killings, along with frequent militant attacks and chronic economic problems have raised fears for the future of U.S.-ally and nuclear-armed Pakistan, where an unpopular coalition government is struggling to cope.

Nothing like the SOP of the typical Islamic fundie to blaspheme Islam.
And they're too stupid to understand it.

The strong possibility of these crazies getting control of Pakistan..and it's nuclear weapons...sure make me sleep better at nights.

"I hope that Sharia Law comes to our neighborhoods ASAP.

And is there any remote chance of that happening? Is there one jurisdiciton anywhere in the United States, ONE, that is proposing or has on the books anything resembling or based on Sharia law?

How do you feel about those in this country who would use Leviticus or other Biblically based laws for the basis of our law? Are you smiliarly worried? If not, why not?

Why is Allah so sensitive? He sure sounds like a pussy.

I knew this was going to be from Pakistan before I even checked the link. That place is so backwards it's unreal.

And the "reform" lawyers will shower them with rose petals.

That rather assumes that the people who did it get caught.

What a barbaric country.

Barbarians have not historicaly killed people over religion. They usually killed people because they had something the Barbarians wanted or they were in the way.
