A quick look at wiki indicates that in South Africa premeditated murder gets a life sentence. Other types of murder get a minimum of 25 years. So, if found guilty of that I think it might hamper his future Olympic/Paralympic prospects.

Culpable homicide though can be a fine or custodial sentence - so it's possible he might walk.

I'm just massively cynical about this kind of thing. It seems almost impossible to me that someone can mistake a loved one for an intruder, and be so convinced by what they are seeing and hearing they actually shoot a gun.
