OS X Leopard Due Oct 26th

What processor do you have? The minimum spec is G4, 876MHz, so if it's less than that, no. Also, if you already have Tiger, I'm not sure there's anything particularly essential in Leopard to upgrade for, but we won't be able to offer a definitive answer until we get our hands on it at the end of the week.
 
Wanted! A copy of Tiger on CDs, not DVD.

PS. If I ever get the brass together for a new high-end laptop for travelling, it would be a Mac+Tiger/Leopard combo. Dreamy!

If memory serves, you can get this but only through Apple directly. In any case, wouldn't it make more sense to upgrade your optical drive? Or at least buy a cheap USB DVD drive.

Sorry, this is Australia. What is this "cheap" you speak of?

It's for an old tangerine iMac, which has a built-in CD drive. It's running some old version of OS-X - 10.1 IIRC. (What is that? Panther or something?) I'm told Tiger is valid for it, and it would be good to have it running (even slowly) as it is only a demo/display museum unit.
 
Panther is 10.3, and was widely available as a CD distribution.

Upgrading the optical drive isn't really feasible, but couldn't you borrow an external DVD drive for the purpose? Or maybe make a disc image of a Tiger DVD on another computer, then port it to the iMac using some sort of portable storage system, such as a high-capacity flash drive or external HDD?
 
If your iMac is late enough to have firewire and you have a laptop you can put the laptop into firewire target disk mode and use its optical drive to install the upgrade directly on the iMac. Another upgrade path that I've used is to pull the hard drive from the iMac and install it in an external enclosure where a clean OS can be installed using another PPC Mac. (This was much faster than trying to do the install over USB 1.0)
 
Every iMac other than the very first Bondai Blue one has FireWire. You're certainly OK with the Tangerine model, but make sure you have enough memory. I remember, when I upgraded my Grape iMac (same generation) to Panther (OS X 10.3), I had to install more memory and run a firmware upgrade first. Wasn't a problem, but might be an issue...
 
It has Firewire, but we have no FW peripherals. I'll see what I can do about building a USB HD storage device for it (I have a spares box of odd parts!). What I do not have is any distribution of OS-X! The originals have been lost/broken/stolen/strayed.
 
Transferring that much data through USB will be a very slow process, as you only have USB 1.1. If you owned the originals, you still have the licence, so you could download through Bit Torrent without guilt.
 
Just link the iMac to another PPC Mac using firewire, boot the iMac into target disk mode and clone the up to date system drive onto the iMac. Only needs the firewire cable and don't need to open any cases. (be sure to backup any user files first)

If you have another Mac with the OS you intend to use on the G3, this is indeed the best solution.
 
If the dept is gonna buy me a new computer, does it make any sense to wait a few days until the 26th? If I order on the 27th, can they still give me the obsolete OS?

You might benefit from ordering it before the 26th as then it will come with Tiger installed and you can take advantage of the "up-to-date" program to get the Leopard DVD.

If you order after the 27th, it is unlikely you will be able to get Tiger pre-installed on a machine. Retail stores and Apple on-line might still have some copies of Tiger kicking around though.
 
I ordered the 5-pack of Leopard. Now I need to figure out which of my Macs to upgrade first. I might do my Intel iMac first, then my MacBook, MacBook Pro, dual G5 Power Mac and finally my new super-duper ultra-mega Mac Pro. I guess that leaves out the old G4 Powerbook. Maybe I'll leave the Power Mac running Tiger for regression testing of new programs and such.

The 2 features I'm most looking forward to are Spaces, a multiple desktop manager, and the improvements to Finder. I'm currently running 4 desktops on two 24" displays on my Mac Pro, but the utility I'm using for that is less than satisfactory. Some of the other eye candy stuff seems quite nice, but not a basis for upgrading.

I'm not addicted to Apple products. I could stop buying them anytime. Really.

No, my old iMac is running fine - I don't need a copy of it.

It's just that I have no installation media at all, and I would rather like to have the security of knowing I can reinstall the thing as required, plus it seems currently to have had a few "standard" components uninstalled (I've not used this version of OS-X so I don't know for sure). It is a donated unit to our museum, and the previous owner believes he tossed the original media out years ago in a clean-out or yard-sale or something. (aaargh!) We don't have media later than about version 8 for the Quadras!

I figured that it would be best to get the latest version supported for the model, which I understand is Tiger.

I will get paid again November 10th, however, the cost of a family pack is pretty much my whole paycheck. :(

Maybe my brother will get a family pack and let me leach off a couple copies (my son has a MacBook Pro).

Wait a couple of months -- with their current track record with the iPhone and iTunes Plus, they'll be a price cut along soon enough! ;)
