OS X Leopard Due Oct 26th

How excited is everybody? I'm expecting it to be useful, but non-essential.

Yes, those are my thoughts as well. Though I'd really like the solid implementation of multiple desktops - that's a feature that's hard to get otherwise, as Spaces killed off the third party development of such.

So I'd be on Tiger a while yet if it wasn't for the development tools. I program a bit with XCode and make patches with Quartz Composer, nothing that is distributed, but anyway. Staying on Tiger is definitely possible but would feel like a dead end with not only the IDE and APIs being updated, but also the main programming language (Objective C to Objective C 2).

This means I can talk myself into believing this is really an essential upgrade to me, even though I can't really afford it and am looking at a new computer within a year and a half (which would come with Leopard included). What to do!

I've now installed Leopard on my iMac and my shiny new 8-core Mac Pro. It was the easiest and smoothest OS upgrade I've ever done, and I've done very many.

I love Spaces, it is better than the YouControl Desktop I was using to manage my multiple desktops. Mail seems faster. Finder is cool. The new Dock is lovely. So far I have not found any apps that do not work under Leopard.

... my shiny new 8-core Mac Pro.

You know, I don't think I like you anymore.

My G4 Powerbook is now sulking in the corner - I see an inferiority complex brewing. Great, that means that now I'll have to spend a lot more time in Classic (which your Xenons can't do, neener neener) to convince it that it's still special.

:D

Your G4 Powerbook is special! I'd be huffing and puffing if I tried to carry my Mac Pro from room to room.

Hey, I made a widget tonight with Dashcode, which as included dev tool in Leopard, man, that was easy!

This is reassuring, since I just told my new boss I want a Mac, rather than a PC.
At least I got a choice this time!

Now I can't wait to play!

Heheh, yes it is. To convince it, I just spent half an hour getting my ~7 year old scanner working under X, using the excellent Sane open source drivers and a healthy dose of bash (still learning). One less reason to keep the Windows tower around...

Having looked at the Leopard reviews, I think I'd like the improved Finder. I just have to convince myself that it's best to wait until 10.5.1 in order to get the bugs ironed out and not having to buy it with the rent money. It's a tough sell.

Argh, that made it even tougher. Not that I really need to make any widgets, but toying with the dev tools sounds like pure geek fun.

Any ideas for a skeptic widget? I can do graphics if needed.

Time machine is looking great but I can see some future improvements that will make it better. Currently TM is creating a full copy of every file that has changed.

Compressing the files and keeping the incremental changes (ala CVS) would reduce the backup space requirements at the expense of a little more CPU crunching. Multiple user TM servers could benefit from recognizing common files that it only needs to keep 1 copy of. In fact, any file that is substantially similar to another file could be added as a revision of that other file. Recognizing substantially similar files remains a bit tricky though.

It would also be useful to be able to create selected archives from the TM archive. For instance, to save the history of a project on a separate DVD before purging or thinning the TM archive.

For those who may be interested, I've just posted a review of Apple's new Time Machine feature on my little known blog, Macs Are Great!

I just bought a mac for my work computer--I will be one of the few mac users at the station.
I'm glad I'm not alone, and I'll keep an eye on your blog!

(I tried really hard to work Viagra into this post, but couldn't get my nerve up.)

Try taking the medication an hour before you intend to post :D

Hey, did you make a decision on that video editing thing?

Congrats whatever the case. Now you have the mac, time to work on that air of superiority ;).
