Watching all that in my office at Purdue. Had the only TV in the building (training conducted there, videos mostly). When the second plane hit the towers I said "where were you the day the war started?" One lady lost her ◊◊◊◊ at that point. They called an ambulance for her. "None available, get back to you ASAP."

One point the USN stressed: "Don't run away from a fire, run toward it." I was often #1 nozzleman, basically pointy end of the stick for fire/flooding/coffee pots empty-type emergencies.

The CPO I worked for at that time said that if we failed there would be no repercussions, because we'd all be dead.
