On this day in history.

Fifty-five years ago today. Events proceed in such a fashion that my mother got TWO KIA-BNR* letters two weeks apart. Not my best day on the job. I would go back twenty years later, helping find EKIA. "Everybody goes home".

1971 My Mom gets the first of two KIA-BNR* letters. The rural letter carrier brings the first letter to the house instead of just leaving it in the mail box. He hadn't read it, by then he knew what a letter from the Navy Dept. meant.

Mom got the second one some time later. She laughed. "The sonofabitch wasn't dead the first time, so I ain't believin' this one neither." Me and her celebrated my double demise every year I was home after that.

I have a vague suspicion that it might have been going on for a while before that...

Much as I suspect that not telling teenagers about contraception doesn't actually prevent them having sex.
