1982 HMS Coventry was sunk by bomb hits from Skyhawks. Nineteen crew were killed
Coventry and Broadsword had taken up position to the north-west of Falkland Sound to act as a decoys to draw Argentinian aircraft away from the ships at San Carlos Bay.
At first, the trap worked and the firswt wave of three attacking aircraft were shot down by Coventry's Sea Dart missiles.
Then they were attacked by two waves Skyhawks flying so low over Pebble Island that Coventry's targeting radar could not distinguish between them and the land.. first weave with a 1,000 lb bomb each the second carried 3 500 pounders.
One bomb bounced off the sea and hit Broadsword's flight deck and wrecked the ship's helicopter but didn't explode.
Coventry hit one aircraft with cannon fire.
The second pair attacked in the same manner and Coventry couldn't gain a missile lock because of their low approach Coventry fired missiles blind and turned towards the attack to reduce her profile. On Broadsword the Sea Wolf system acquired the attacking aircraft, but was unable to fire as Coventry's turn took her directly into the line of fire.
Coventry was hit by three bombs just above the water line on the port side. One exploded beneath the computer room, destroying it and the nearby operations room, incapacitating almost all senior officers. One entered the forward engine room, exploding beneath the junior ratings dining room where the first aid party was stationed, and the ship immediately began listing to port. This hit caused critical damage as it breached the bulkhead between the forward and aft engine rooms, exposing the largest open space in the ship to uncontrollable flooding The third bomb did not explode.[ Coventry capsized and sank in less than 20 minutes. Such as small ship couldn't survive three big bomb hits.
Again the Argentinian pilots showing suicidal bravery
