I keep checking back on this thread to see if anybody's going to correct the impression spread throughout that these are somehow the words of Chuck Norris. In fact, they are not; they are the words of Lew Pritchett, former chairman of Proctor and Gamble, which means that he was (at one point in his life) far more important than Chuck Norris.

He may be a senile, drooling old man for all I know (that he retired in 1989 indicates he's at least advanced in his years), but what Chuck did here was to reprint verbatim except for the introduction the guy's letter to the editor of the NY Times.

So why is it that 35 replies later nobody's mentioned this? Yes, I understand that because Chuck's name's on the column he obviously endorses the sentiments. But nobody thought to mention that he wasn't actually the one who's "scared"?

BTW, to those of you who reply that you saw it it was a World Net Daily link, you are completely forgiven for not actually reading the article.

Since when is this anything new? Seems to me the media, and the American people, love fetishizing the President, no matter which party he's from.

Witness the teary-eyed devotion - of civilians no less - to "my commander-in-chief" during the Bush years. Reagan has been sainted. Clinton had a few good years before the scandals broke.

I don't think the media are discernably fetishizing this President any more than previous ones. Sure, after scandal and/or mismanagement sometimes the lustre wears off, but bring in a new guy and its back to hero-worship.

What I see much more of, is complaints by people who dislike this current president of an amorphous "media", never cited with any examples, who are apparently treating Obama as "King" or "God". Sounds to me like they're playing off the "celebrity" attack ads of the campaign and the crowd shots of people in tears.

I think the words "King" and "God" are a bit strong but its not as if Obama is the first president to get fawning treatment - that's as American as apple pie in my books.

Norris certainly isn't an intellectual, neither is he dumb. Like most people who, despite their cognitive state, take it upon themselves to comment on matters more or less beyond their area of expertise and objectivity, tend to give an unflattering and often 'dumb' impression.

Norris certainly haven't said much, or supported sentiments (politically) that isn't echoed resoundingly here and there in the US. This doesn't make it any less of a string of brainfarts though, but during this past decade where I have engaged in a lot of theological/political studies I can't say I've seen anything said from him that I haven't heard ad nauseum from scores of pop-cultural priests, rabbis et al.

Nothing new under the sun, and hardly controversial. Just typical, born-again political knee-jerk reactions to a president who is actually smart enough to implement a bit of socialism and possibly (allthough doubtedly) secular sentiments into the fog-of-war that is Jesus Land and US capitalism.

As a sideline curiosa; I've been a Norris fan since I was a child. I don't consider him a terrific actor, but I found and do find him entertaining. Also, he was once an admirable, thoroughly competent and succesful karate-ka.

I know he is a YEC, but he certainly isn't dumber than the average american (which might say or not say a lot). Chris Langan is an ID'er for example.
Unfortunately, intelligent people aren't always intellectuals so to speak. They oft pass over logical and critical thinking over a metaphysical/faith based attachment concerning the 'deep' questions about life et al.
