while I agree with his statement 100%, that freedom and tolerance must always trump extremism and irrational fear, I wish he had stayed out of this one.

I think NYC Mayor Bloomberg was doing a fine job articulating why this Mosque should be allowed to be built. Now its truly become a national issue, and many Americans have forgotten what America is all about.

I hope that Obama's next statement on this issue will show more sensitivity to the emotions of the family members, and perhaps suggest & maybe even host a meeting between the Cordoba folks and 9-11 family members.

Clearly, the Islamophobes want no new mosques anywhere in NYC or in the USA for that matter, the more rational folks can be reasoned with and have their fears and concerns calmed.

I am glad to have his leadership on this one. He needs to stand up for the values that got helped get him elected. The right will bash him no matter what so he may as well have a clear conscious when they do.

This whole 'controversy' is just a sad comment on how ignorant and intolerant America is becoming.

yes, it could cost him.

but Obama is a very eloquent man. if he plays this right, he could use this to show his commitment to American values of freedom and equality, and shame the Conservatives back into their holes.

Freedom of Religion is more important than the freedom to "not be offended".

Now, could the Muslims have chosen a site a little farther from GZ? Yes.

But now its too late. Now they can't back down....as it would be seen as capitulating to extremism.

Wow if there was’nt an anti American/anti-Christ/communist label on the president yet there sure will now.
Now I don’t think they should be allowed build the mosque that near to ground zero either, but the point he made about religious freedom is 100% correct.
But it will still end his political future.
He may as well have said, “oh and by the way, don’t bother trying to elect me ever again”
The mosque will never be built, cause of lawsuits.
The Moslems that want it there are “dicks” and the zoning board that approved it are also.
Please, if it’s ever built, there will 24 / 7 protesting and fire bombing parties, what were they thinking?
 
If this area is such "hallowed ground" perhaps they could get rid of the topless bars and OTB sites that are currently there before pretending to be so holy and righteous.
 
I'm sorry to say I agree with your assessment. It was brave but pointless: political suicide in front of a nation of fickle, short-tempered, five-minute-memory voters.

if the Tea-Baggers and other Conservatives go into full extremist/bigot mode, they will expose their true selves, and possibly insure the Democrat's hold on Congress in November.

extremists muslims are probably watching the reaction to this mosque with absolute glee. They win when we decide that the values and freedoms our society is built on are less important than bigotry, intolerance, and petty revenge.
