Obama commutes Chelsea Manning sentence.

Seems right. I doubt Manning has a high chance of recidivism. I don't think any additional time will affect the deterrent rate. No reason to imprison someone then.

Yep it is only republicans who get pardoned for leaking top secret information, see Scooter Libby. Leaking is only acceptable when done for political gain not to bring wrongdoing to light, that is one of the main purposes of keeping things classified after all.

Your opinions could not be more wrong. Just add your opinions to the list of those who know nothing about the tenants of National Security.

Leaking of National Secrets is tantamount to treason no matter who does it. Assage is nothing more than a misguided attention whore. In addition, he is a coward. He is hiding from a rape allegation as opposed to facing his accusers and proving his innocence.

If he's receiving monetary benefit from his misguided actions it is from our enemies both foreign and domestic. If you support that then welcome to allegations of treasonous behavior.

You are only partially correct. He should have been executed as that might possibly have resulted in the proper deterrent.

I do agree that his continued confinement would not provide a significant deterrent. His execution likely would have.

However, the commutation of his sentence sends the wrong message too. It's just another reason to establish Obama's legacy as one of disrepute.

Yep the weakening of public confidence when they learn about government overreach and illegal actions is the reason so much is kept secret. That is really why those in Abugraib got punished, they were doing what they were supposed to but they let pictures get out so they needed to be scape goated. Public reaction demanded it. THat is why the CIA was right to destroy their photographs of their torture methods, if they got out it would mandate that the people who violated the law be punished.

Government can only keep going when under a proper degree of secrecy and having the public unable to hold them accountable. Violating peoples constitutional rights is only a problem when the public finds out about it.

The evidence that the death penalty is a deterrent is very weak.
