Fine, I've been thinking about the issue in my normal somnolent slow way.

1) Many Americans feel -- or claim they feel -- hated by Germans.

2) Putative evidence is shown that many Germans will allegedly immediately launch into criticisms of American foreign policies (counting Kyoto and thus climate as one of those foreign policies) whenever they happen upon an American.

3) This is taken as evidence that Germans hate Americans.

I don't agree much with (2); I think it's been muchly exaggerated. I do know that Americans who I have personally known in Germany have never felt unduly persecuted.

But it's (3) that is the biggest problem. Let's look at it again; Americans don't get discriminated against in Germany for being American, Americans don't get violently assaulted in Germany for being American, etc. etc. etc.

So I would guess I would say to Americans: look, you may well feel personally unjustly criticised or put on the spot. If that does really happen, yes, granted, it's a bugger.

However, you are still not being hated. There is a very real difference between being unjustly criticised, or being put personally on the spot for your country's policies, and being hated.

Sheeesh.

Know who the biggest critics of Australians are? Australians. We run down our own country like crazy, we insult ourselves all the time. No offence to anyone, but a slightly thicker skin and somewhat less melodrama seems terribly much in order for some.
