NY Times Article on UFO sighting

It was years ago that I posted, so it probably doesn't hurt to say again, that I wish you could have seen the amazing shape-changing white object I saw in the sky one dark night: When I first spotted it, it was a diamond, but over a few seconds it gradually changed to a pentagon and then to a thin triangle. I was pretty scared by this stage as I had absolutely no idea what this huge, silent and very bright thing could be.

Then the clouds moved a bit and I could see it was a portion of the full moon, viewed past the well-defined edges of overlapping clouds.

I saw the Devil once. Or maybe just a devil.

It was night. I was driving into town. As I approached an intersection with a stop sign, I slowed my car and checked my rear view mirror as is my habit when slowing down.

There, in my mirror, was the Devil. He was in the middle of the road, floating slowly towards my car. At least, he seemed to be standing still, but gliding towards me. He was framed by darkness, and lit from below by the red flames of hell.

Then he came to a stop just behind my car, and tilted his body slightly to one side.

And that's when I realized it was just a guy on a bicycle, rolling to a stop, illuminated by my brake lights.

I've told my ghost story about altered perception several times n this board, but I still think it's a good example of how just because we ca't imagine what something is, it doesn't mean it's extra-terrestrial or supernatural.

I was at my paternal grandmother's funeral. The service was over and we were out at the graveside, which was a small rural church graveyard way out in the country. The graveyard was surrounded by wire fences, with woods on one side, a pasture on the next two sides, and the church on the fourth side. The fence between it and the pasture had a few trees and bushes along the fence line, and the pasture sloped upwards to a small hill with a tree on top.

After the graveside service, the family stayed around to talk and visit a bit before leaving. It was getting to be dusk about that time. I noticed a group of people standing over near the fence by the pasture, looking up at the hill. I went over to see what they were looking at.

Clear as day, at the top of the hill under the tree, was the glowing white figure of a woman. She would walk a bit to one side, then disappear. Then reappear and walk a back. This kept happening for several minutes as we all watched.

If the story had ended here, there would have been a clear dozen witnesses to a ghost story, and several "You can't explain that, skeptics!" responses for years afterwards.

However, I went over the fence a bit to get a closer look.

What we saw was a cow.

It was a mostly black cow, but with white front legs and a white stripe over it's front shoulders. In the dusk, and shaded under the tree, you couldn't see the black parts. When the cow walked with it's side towards us, you only saw the white parts, which looked a lot like a person. When it faced us or turned away, you couldn't see it any more.

This ties in a bit because it was a perception problem in multiple ways. The poor lighting caused us to miss parts of what we were seeing. The shape seen was matched to the closest analog (it didn't really look much like a person once we figured out what it was). Not only that, but if we had judged distance and size correctly, it would've been an awful short woman.

But if we hadn't gone and looked, the idea of a cow would never have been given any credence at all.

Just last Summer, around twilight, I saw two rather slow-moving red lights at some altitude.
No engine sounds, no helicopters... One light was rather steady, the other jinked around a bit.
Fortunately, I had big 10x binoculars in the squad car... It was two birds. Probably egrets... They were catching the rays of the setting Sun, while it was near-dark at ground level. Only with the binoculars could I see the wing-beats.

… And that's when I realized it was just a guy on a bicycle, rolling to a stop, illuminated by my brake lights.

I really wasn't sure what to make of the monstrous glowing head which stared at me from the back of a car I was stuck behind in traffic one night.

I was following a car with its rear window divided into two differently sloping sections. As the cars crawled forward a little, I suddenly became aware that a giant, pale face, which must have been two feet wide, had risen up in the back of that car so that it could peer at its intended prey with its huge unblinking eyes through the letterbox-shaped lower part of the window. It was unearthly, surreal and absolutely terrifying.

For a few seconds. Until I realised it was the reflection of the giant electronic billboard behind us and I was being stared at by Adele. Phew.

When driving in the country at night I would marvel at how the reflection from my headlights off telegraph wires kept up with the speed of my car.
Then, when the telegraph line went off at an angle from the road, the reflections would zoom away at an incredible speed.

I guess you maybe able to identify the devil, as s/he will probably be wearing Prada...

Please do!

Indeed. When I visited the Manic 5 damn or some of the open-air mines we have up here, I couldn't judge their size because my eye had no reference point. In both cases a vehicle (on the dam, in the mine) finally gave me a scale. Both the dam and the mine were enormous!

So yeah, if you can't see what it is, it's hard to know how close, large or fast it is.

We have way too much confidence in our own perceptions and experiences.

What do they dig out of the Manic damn and why is it damning (or damned)?

You see, it's just how human brain works. It can't process unknown. You've seen genuine extraterrestrial aircraft, doing what no common aircraft can do. It's only logical you thought it's reflection of light on the light poles. But true skeptic would never allow himself to be fooled like this.

In December of 2017, The New York Times published a stunning front-page exposé about the Pentagon’s mysterious UFO program, the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP). Featuring an interview with a former military intelligence official and Special Agent In-Charge, Luis Elizondo, who confirmed the existence of the hidden government program, the controversial story was the focus of worldwide attention. Previously run by Elizondo, AATIP was created to research and investigate Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) including numerous videos of reported encounters, three of which were released to a shocked public in 2017. Elizondo resigned after expressing to the government that these UAPs could pose a major threat to our national security and not enough was being done to deal with them or address our potential vulnerabilities. Now, as a part of HISTORY’s groundbreaking new six-part, one-hour limited series UNIDENTIFIED: INSIDE AMERICA’S UFO INVESTIGATION, Elizondo is speaking out for the first time with Tom DeLonge, co-founder and President of To The Stars Academy of Arts & Science and Chris Mellon, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense and Intelligence, to expose a series of startling encounters and embark on fascinating new investigations that will urge the public to ask questions and look for answers. The series will reveal newly authenticated evidence and footage, interviews from eyewitnesses and former military personnel who have never spoken out before, and extensive breakthroughs in understanding the technology behind these unknown phenomena in our skies.

I have seen too many such shows. They always try to promote woo ideas, and they always give a rational explanation the shortest screen time.
