Heck, it isn't even that long ago that the US government asked many of its allies: "Hey, do you want to help us finance those new Joint Strike Fighters. You won't get any contracts for the development of the thing, you won't get any discount on the things when they are ready and not even a garantee that we'll allow you to buy some. That'll be a few gazillion, please."
And those allies said: "Okay!"
Absolutely right, Australia was dumb enough to sign up for a fighter that has no purpose. The ony people with a comparable aircraft will be our allies.
