I wonder how much of this has to do with verbal confusion. Obama is a "socialist" in the European sense of the word, which, in America, would mean something like "Democrat" or "liberal". He is not a "socialist" in the American sense, which means really "communist".

No he isn't. In many of the countries that are part of the EU his politics would be considered to be to the right, and in the UK his politics would be considered far-right, indeed he is further right than the Conservative party (the UK's mainstream "right wing" party) has been for over 50 years, and yes that includes Thatcher's years as leader of the Conservatives.
 
There is also the fact that 'Socialist' is a slur in America, a bogeyman.

Personally I can find Socialism palatable or chuckle worthy, depending on specific tenets, but it doesn't make me want to weld the bunker door closed.

I've gotten the impressive from the general tenor of his posts that in Skeptic's political spectrum Eisenhower would be a flaming liberal, Nixon would be a RINO, and Reagan should be be viewed with some suspicion.

The "center" would be clustered around Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms.
 
also in one of the proud EU-free countries, he would be considered to the right of our right wing party in economics while he isn't as bigoted as our right wingers.

Sooner or later, they need to be arrested and tried for murder any way. And they have made it worse by injecting the dispersants into the oil and spreading the spill through the water column.

Had government been doing its job, kicking rather than kissing the butts of the corporations, we wouldn't have this problem. That is the fault of the conservatives who think that industry should regulate industry. If my position in this regard is Communist, then Communism is more logical. You have a few million gallons of laissez-faire capitalism stinking up the Gulf Coast now.

Obama needs to rely more on the scientific communioty and less on the industry that just crapped on our carpets.
 
Those that say the Top Kill was BP's last hope have no idea what they are talking about. There are many options, they have only explored the quicker ones due to pressure to stop the leak ASAP. There are other options that are slower but well proven.
 
Sure there are. However, I think that the relief well is the one that is going to ultimately work. This means 2 more months of oil gushing into the ocean.

In the US, I would agree with this part. The ironic thing is the safety culture on the land rigs in the USA is far worse than the offshore rigs.

By theory of depraved indifference, it is first degree murder. There may be more murders to add to the list. Corporate thugs told workers not to wear the respirators the Coast Guard passed out to them. If anybody dies from oil-related illness, it is murder.

210,000 gallons of oil over nearly six weeks vs a five minute wait behind a mini van to get your Whopper.
