Nuke the damn oil leak!!

If you're suggesting they hoped for danger to occur, I'm not convinced, sorry.

They conspired to skirt the rules, thinking that they would not get caught. They didn't care that it was wrong.
MMS? Who is that?

Minerals Management Service. A government agency that is supposed to manage mineral exploitation including operations of oil rigs.

And you lost me there. Not gonna go into this.

Depraved indifference to human life resulting in human deaths is murder.

That's also quite true.

Most of it is on the shoulders of anti-environmentalists and free-market fanatics.

I was unaware that the MMS had strict rules on the amount and type of drilling mud that had to be used in every instance. Lefty apparently has evidence that this is true, or he wouldn't be spouting off like this.
Apparently micromanagement has taken over all engineering decisions.

Nobody learned a damn thing from Challenger.

What one of the BP maggots admitted at a televised conggressional hearting was that this was a never-before-done procedure to replace the mud with sea water.

Nobody with a room-temp IQ experiements with that sort of thing in a situation where they already had warnings that something wasn't quite right down there. Whether there was a rule in place or not, anybody with the common sense it takes not to be assigned a conservator due to incompetancy sticks with what is known to work, especially when you already have waivers up to your eyeballs for other half-assed stuff you are doing. There is just no excuse for injecting sea water instead of concrete.

Nobody learned a damn thing from Challenger.

They didn't want to. It would make them feel bad about collecting bonuses for skirting the safety rules.

This is why I favor such draconian treatment for BP and Transocean. The days of wiggling out from under a murder charge by paying a civil fine must end here. You will never convince the suits of this because most of their souls are being commoditized with the bad mortgage loans. Let's concentrate on getting the people to call their congress critters to complain.

And you have never done that?

Depraved indifference to human life resulting in human deaths is murder.

You are wrong. Corporate manslaughter at worst. Couldnt you just wait until after stuff has been proved? You posts are nothing more than rabid drivel at the moment.

And you have never done that?

With other people's lives at stake, hell no. And that they did it for profit is an aggravating circumstance.

They just figured that if anyone gets killed, all they do is pay a fine. If any of the sick oil skimmers die, it is going to be totally obvious that the company is screwed to the wall. They ordered people not to wear respirators. They have not informed the public that the waters off some of the coast are deadly toxic and possibly carcinogenic. It is only a matter of time before some kid dies of contact with it. That is "depraved indifference." That raises it to murder.

Learn some law, Cobalt. You tell somebody something is safe and it kills him, you have murdered him. Depraved indifference. End of story.

The people who scream the loudest that environmentalists are whackos are the same ones who corrupted the MMS. This was no accident, it was recklessness in the face of dire warnings. The attitude that punk boy Tony showed to the workers getting sick from his illegally dispensed dispersant is proof that he doesn't give a rat's about working people's safety.

Hang the creep.

Never driven over the speed limit or driven after a few beers? Ye, right.

This is a lie.

Another lie. On a roll there mate.

Not really. The dirt bag didn't want people to wear respirators because it makes his company look bad. If any of them die, he has murdered them by depraved indifference. Manslaughter is saying "Eat these beans" and accidentally giving somebody food poisoning because you didn't think to heat them to 212F after they had been left out overnight.

Feeding someone bad beans that you know are bad is murder by theory of depraved indifference.

That's what punk boy Tony is doing to cleanup workers. If any of them die, he should never see the horizon for the rest of his life.

Dear oh dear, gonna have to ask you to back up the "company look bad" bit.

Not really a lie but not the entire truth either. Depraved indifference can lead to 2nd degree murder but that varies by jurisdiction. I'm not exactly sure what laws will apply. State or federal? Which state? It's a real mess.

I'd like to know the environmental impacts of the Russian method before using it. However, I do suspect the reason we don't use this in the Gulf is because of the anti-nuke sentiment here.

Man, it is a mile under water. What is wrong with you people? The big bad nuke goblin will come and get us? It will produce a sea monster like a bad Japanese monster movie?

I'm not experienced enough on this forum to know your posting habits, so my question before I answer is:
Is this satire, or are you serious?
What exactly is wrong with using nukes? Is there something magically evil with nukes just for the sake of being nukes. Nuclear weapon tests are conduced -- or, were conducted -- all the time and the world did not end. THe OP even posted the news article that reported that this method has been done before. We need a president who will grow a pair and do the right thing.

I had the same idea before I saw this post. My idea is a little different and involves first covering the area with large blocks of lead and rocks and then using a nuke to turn a rock and metal mound into a seal.

You can't detonate it on the site itself because of the radioactive debris generated from the irradiation of the material that would be vaporized in the creation of the explosion crater. The only way one could avoid this would be to bury the nuke deep enough so that the explosion would not breach the floor of the sea.

When the superpowers used to conduct underground tests, it often took MONTHS to dig out a shaft to the required depths to keep the detonations trapped underground - and this was from the surface. I don't know of any technology that currently exists that would allow a similar shaft to be dug out in over a mile of water...

OOOO radioactivity!! Guess what else gives off radioactivity? Every mountain on earth gives off radioactivity. Geiger counters are never silent unless they are turned off.

Besides, I doubt anyone is thinking of setting off a nuke on the surface of the water.

The radioactivity produced on the ocean floor that would be produced by the nuke when sealing the leak would be the lesser of two evils. We are killing a lot more animals by letting the oil continue to destroy the ecosystem in the Gulf.

Lots of nuclear weapons tests were done on the surface and above the surface of the earth. We all survived.

There are already natural seepages of oil in the region. Unless they know where every one of the fissures created by the Creataceous meteor impact run, unless they know the nature of every stratum of rock in the area, they have a chance of opening an even bigger leak there or somewhere they do not expect it. After a nuke, other ideas might not even be permitted by the conditions created.

Where in the world are you getting your information? The oil reservoir is in the Tertiary, far above the Cretaceous. Is the oil sinking DOWN to get into those deadly fissures?

As I said earlier, please, for your own good, don't try to pretend you know anything about geology. It's like hearing a creationist try to describe how the Grand Canyon was caused by the great flood.

The earth is not a nice neat layer cake. Ever hear of a sink hole? Carlsbad Cavern is an example of how those form.

The Grand Canyon is cut through just about every age of rocks in the world. Stuff happens in a span of 65 million years, you know. Ever pour concrete over ground that was not prepped right?

Thing about nukes is that if you screw up that shot, you are totally screwed because you may no longer have what you need to try the next trick out of the bag. The way it looks right now, it is probably a good thing they didn't do it.

Won't work. 5000 feet under water remember? That means that the explosion is transmitted rather well. Anything close enough to be fused by the heat is going to be blown clear (probably several times due to the rebound effect you see in underwater nuclear explosions).

Yes, I know quite well what a sinkhole is. They almost never form under an ocean. Carlsbad Cavern is not a sinkhole, it is a cave. Though the two are related (both forming in karst terrains) they are not the same thing. Interestingly, Carlsbad Caverns were formed by a slightly different process than most caves. I will leave it to you as an exercise to find out what was different. Maybe you will learn something.

Believe me, I know a great deal more about the formation of the Grand Canyon than you, though I admit, not as much as structural geologists. (I'm more of a sedimentary geologist.)

Your statement about concrete is completely bizarre and irrelevant to any discussion going on. I advised you to quit while you were... well... not ahead, but not so far behind. I re-emphasize that advice.

This is about the only thing you've said that made sense. There are many many good reasons not to use nukes. It is true, though, that once you have done that, all other methods are off the table. If it doesn't work, you just have oil perculating up through a pile of rubble with no possible point of closure. That would be, to use technical language, "bad".
