Notable Passings and other milestones

Alfred Brendel has died, aged 94.

Radio 3 are currently playing one of his last recorded recitals.

Linton Stephens introduces one of Alfred Brendel's final recitals, the last recorded by BBC Radio 3 at Snape Maltings Concert Hall in Suffolk in 2008.One of the supreme pianists of our time, Alfred Brendel had been a welcome visitor to Snape for many years and he presented a programme of music linking four of the composers closest to him during his 60-year career.Haydn: Andante and Variations in F minorMozart: Sonata in F, K. 533/494Beethoven: Sonata in E flat, Op 27. Between her and Guy Fieri, they probably kept the hair care product industry afloat for the last 20 years. I was initially amused at Worst Cooks in America, then it got all shtik-y and "character"-y and just plain stupid.

Originally the show was about people genuinely wanting to learn new skills and improve their lives. At one point, three former competitors returned as a team on The Great Food Truck Race and won using the skills they learned on the show and afterward. When I quit watching it had become more focused on food-related games and stunts.

Then perhaps I am mistaken. I thought a trill was just a waver (not a musical term) between two notes, and a gliss was a rising waver, like the beginning of Rhapsody in Blue.
Yes, a trill is a rapid switch between two adjacent notes. A glissando is a slide between notes, like beginners always do with a trombone. The introduction to the Mission Impossible theme has both - a sustained trill, then a short gliss, as I said, up to the downbeat and the beginning of the motif.

His singing was ◊◊◊◊. Just pure ◊◊◊◊. I love that type of music, but his vocals were so totally over-produced it's insane that anyone liked his 'singing'. Not saying I'm happy he's dead, just that we didn't lose some talent vocalist is all.

Edit to add perspective - when was the last time you celebrated some track like Planet Caravan (which I love) versus the ◊◊◊◊ Ozzy got famous and was known for post Black Sabbath?

His vocals were crap, and any kudos need to go to his sound mixer, not him.

People like what they like. I saw Ozzy sing with Black Sabbath in concert. It was fun. He had a unique voice. He's lucky he found his wife or he would have been dead 40 years ago.
