North Korea....what to do what to do

I don't know if this belongs in the USA Politics thread or here (it concerns the US to an extent, but in relation to N.Korea, so Mods move if you wish)

I am kinda at my wits end about North Korea. The people are starving to death, their leadership is nuts, and China isn't doing much but holding the leash.

So what to do?

I think we should make some sort of deal with China, maybe an alliance if you will. We will get more on their side with certain things they want done in the UN ...etc But they have to get control of North Korea. Open the borders up (well as open as China's are) run the leadership out of the country and make it friggin China for all I care.

I'm not usually one for crusading idealistic plans, but it just sickens me how the leadership has treated their citizens there.


caveat: Yes I know that China isn't exactly the trend setter in human rights, but when compared to North Korea, they are like Canada!!! I'm serious ! I bet that the North Korean people would love to actually be able to eat and be part of a nation who is developing rather than collapsing.

You might be wrong, I am afraid. This video is worth watching as the presenter shows that North Koreans apparently tend to want to live in North Korea and prefer the idea of being part of a superior race. That they would rather be hungry than colonized which would make your idea for a Chinese invasion a non-starter.

And, no, I don't think it should be moved to USA politics. There is almost no division between the parties on what to do about North Korea and it concerns more than just those who live in the US. In fact, it concerns people who live in the US very little compared to some other parts of the world such as South Korea, China and Japan.

I tend to think that North Koreans are deathly afraid of speaking against the party line due to fear of immediate execution. I recently watched a documentary about North Koreans who were able to escape and it was horrific.

I agree, at this point it seems very difficult to a realistic idea how most S. Koreans really feel. I suspect the worst.

I don't think any western military solution would be feasible as it would end up pissing off the Chinese and perhaps leading to a major WW3 type scenario. However, I think telling the Chinese that if they want to invade it themselves and take over we will look the other way is a good option.

As I said, they can't possibly do a worse job running the country.

The core of Angrysoba point is very relevant - North Korean's long before the current regime was incredibly racist. The current regime has simply plugged into the prevailing racial superiority projected by North Koreans, and amplified into their cultural identity

Plus there's always the fact that nothing unifies like an imminent outside threat.

I think the Chinese response would be something like, "Yeah, thanks for telling us what we can and can't do and very kind you are too to offer us the equivalent of a malarial cesspit. We're more than happy to jump right in there and hopefully put your minds at ease and we expect to be greeted with sweets and flowers and the undying gratitude that invaders are used to. Who couldn't want the responsibility of feeding twenty million almost-starving people and a barren crashed economy. Yessiree, that is one mighty fine offer, we'll get back to you as soon as we've decided just how we're going to go about it. Don't call us; we'll call you!"

Don't you think Koreans on both sides of the border might be slightly concerned about the US bartering half the peninsula away to China?

Perhaps we should employ this approach elsewhere too? We'll give most of Africa to the French if they can't sort themselves out by the end of the year. If the Indians and Pakistanis don't behave we'll let the UK take over. Plus we'll give the nod to the USA that we'd be OK with them taking over Canada.

Maybe we should just put more sanctions on them - just to make sure that rising oppression, increased numbers of starving people and soaring threats to their neighbors will give us even more reason to shake our fists ... till they fall off.

Clearly, if we could get China and Russia to stop propping them up, the government would implode. I have heard that China's main concern is a flood of refugees and the a US armed Korea on their border. I don't see anyway around this.

Germany lost the war, that's why the relations normalized.
