are they really gonna do this?

NK really is cruisin' for a bruisin'. Maybe its time they finally get it.

If they fire one single missile, and its trajectory is within 1,000 feet of an American ship or plane, I say we blow these **** ers back to the stone age.

China better get its boy in line or he's gonna get beat down.

By the way, KCNA is a source of constant beyond-parody-totalitarian rhetoric.

The Committe for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said:

If the puppet group insists on confrontation with the DPRK, the DPRK does not have any idea of dodging it at all.

It is the temperament of the DPRK to resolutely counter confrontation with confrontation and war with war.

The army and people of the DPRK are now greatly enraged at the provocation of the puppet group while getting fully ready to give a shower of dreadful fire and blow up the bulwark of the enemies if they dare to encroach again upon the DPRK's dignity and sovereignty even in the least.

The group should not run amuck, clearly understanding the will and mettle of the highly alerted army and people of the DPRK to wipe out the enemies.

Escalated confrontation would lead to a war and he who is fond of playing with fire is bound to perish therein.

Gone are the days when verbal warnings are served only.

We will respond to good faith in kind but punish the provocateurs encroaching upon our dignity and sovereignty with resolute and merciless counter-action.

Well, if NK actually does start a war, the Dear Leader's son will never get to rule.

Are they really this crazy?

I doubt it.

No, they're probably not - although I wouldn't think that the only thing at stake for the regime here is whether or not Kim Jong Eun gets to rule. The only thing they are concerned about is the survival of the regime and the difficulty with that is the only thing the regime derives its legitimacy from is its military-first ideology of aggression. If there was no confrontation with the "west" then there would be no reason for the regime to remain as it is. It couldn't legitimize itself to its people as it has brough the country to bankrupcty and starvation. It might be gambling on the idea that a limited war will get the population behind them more fervently particularly as they are going to be in need of food very shortly which they cannot supply.

Well, they got their aggression. They killed 2 South Korean Marines and a few civilians. They burned a village to the ground.

I am 100% confident that if they fire a single rocket at an American or SK ship during the next few day's exercises, they will get a retaliation at a scale not seen since the bombing of Serbia.

And if they go further, then..thats it. End the NK regime.

Why are you so sure? They sank the Cheonan and what happened?

Nothing!

So, they shelled a village on a small South Korean island killing civilians.

What happened?

Nothing!

So, they may reason that they can push the enveolpe further and expect no retaliation.

To be honest, if that is their reasoning I couldn't say with any confidence that they're completely wrong.

Crazy like a fox.

No, they won't actually start a war. NK misbehaves and acts outrageously when it wants to be bought off. It has consistently worked for them in the past; do something crazy to create a 'crisis' and agree to behave only after being offered something.

What??? And advance their quality of life 1000 years?

Hey ... maybe you have a point there.

Actually a lot has happened. There has been a shake up in the South Korean government and the mood in the South has turned dramatically. Most SK supported peaceful overtures to resolve tension. Now, particularly among the younger SK population they want to start bitch slapping the North

Its not going to happen :( In August the two countries had very high level talks and it was made clear China's backing of North Korea is both rock solid and non negotiable

I would almost bet those meetings discussed what is happening now, and the Chinese gave the green light. Why? I have no clue, just a feeling in my water

If that happens, there are 1300 artillery pieces pointed at Seoul, ready to level it in a short time. NK would be wiped out, but so would the capital of SK and many civilian casualties.

Do you think that we can go against N Korea in our weakened state? Do you think that China's going to sit by and let us 'beat down' N Korea? :eye-poppi

They have nowhere near that many capable of hitting Seoul. And those they do have could likely be wiped out with ease.

China, like North Korea, tends to come away from these little confrontations with something in the way of concessions. They're not likely looking for any concessions on their bad boys in Pyongyang. They're just content to let them serve as S-disturbers. But they're also highly unlikely to have told the north that it'd be okay to fire on a US ship or plane - China's got its own self-interests and brinksmanship with the US is not on their agenda right now.

The US won't say whether or not, but I'm also pretty sure the USN will be under orders to not respond if fired on - to let the South Koreans handle it.

With recent events, I'm betting that they're(the PRC) hoping to leverage this into concessions on Diaoyu. I doubt they'll get what they want (Japan completely ceding their claims), but they might get the US to back a formal conference on the topic, or to give lip service to the idea that it's a more open case than originally thought.
