Noam Chomsky sits in paradise, spits on the floor.

To quote myself...he's sitting in an air-conditioned room, wearing machine-stitched clothes, surrounded by books, near indoor plumbing, eating complementary food, filling his plump over-nutritioned belly, looking through scientifically-designed glasses, talking with freedom of speech, at an age far beyond historical human life expectancy, and he has the nerve to call the nation around him a third-world country.

It's not often that I've been more disgusted at a human being than I am by that piece of **** after watching that clip. I normally reserve wishes of death for mass murderers, rapists or child molesters, but in his case...since he has no respect for the world around him and the centuries of research, life's work, scientific progress, revolution and bloodshed that created the chair upon which he sits to spout those words...I am glad he won't be alive much longer.

I have mixed feelings about Chomsky but yeah, he comes off as an ass here.

filling his plump over-nutritioned belly,
For a guy his age, he looks pretty fit.

he has the nerve to call the nation around him a third-world country.
He's talking about how much development there is in high-speed rail. And he's being rather charitable. Here is an example of a train in an actual "third world" country. The clip also shows a bit where the train rides next to a motorway. See for yourself whether it can keep up with traffic.

The "third world" has been catching up.

wow...hate much?

God I wish I could make a living being a professional jerk. How do you get into that?

Write more about things that piss people off. You need to think big time. Like blaming the fetus for getting aborted. That'll piss a lot of people off.

I agree that we should wish someone dead for criticising the USA.
Particulary when that criticism stoops so low as to focus on a putative lack of investment in the rail system.

Pictured above, a plump and over-nutritioned belly. But even if he was perfectly fit, that would still fit perfectly with the point. You realize that, right?

He stated unequivocally that we're living in a third-world country, economically and socially. Period. You don't follow arguments very well, do you?

You enter the "intellectual sphere" where you aren't responsible for the applications and consequences of your ideas, only their popularity. That way you can display disgusting, hypocritical and delusional behavior like that quoted in the OP.

That's cute. Try reading what I actually said instead of making up strawmen.

Yo Dr. Rudesmuch of the Institute for Abrasive Online Communication, it's a 30 second clip from likely a much longer interview.

...an interview featuring a man who has written thousands of pages that make the same attacks on the United States and that have nothing to do with high-speed rail.

You have to get on teevee. If you do get on teevee, be ready to start being a total jerk immediately. You may only have a few seconds to get their attention, so make it good. Once they focus on you, you're in.

Chomsky's worldview has all the nuance and sophistication of a sophomore in college. Which is probably why he's so popular with that crowd.

More like an old man belly. You'd be darn lucky if you reach 83 looking like that.

But even if he was perfectly fit, that would still fit perfectly with the point.
Depends on what exactly your point is with mentioning his belly.

He stated unequivocally that we're living in a third-world country, economically and socially. Period.
Yes, and that's putting it rather nicely. There are "Third World" countries that do better economically and socially. Where average life expectancy is higher than in the US, with better and more equitable healthcare. Some third world countries have better social safety nets. His machine-stitched clothes were quite likely made in a Third World country. He probably could get his scientifically designed glasses a lot cheaper if he ordered them over the internet, from a Third World country. Some of his food was imported from Third World countries. He moans about about how a train line has gotten only a bit faster, but he is nice enough not to mention that the main reason the US even has a "high speed" train is because the US government has borrowed a lot of money... from Third World countries.

This also holds for the Twilight books, The World Is Flat, Atlas Shrugged, and the Bible.

If anyone came up with a rail plan that had a prayer of not becoming a white elephant I'd be all for it.

The US simply doesn't have the population density to support nationwide HSR. Hell, our existing light rail is falling apart and they can't even afford to fix that, so where is the money going to come from to build and maintain a HSR system? Certainly not from paying customers.

How come a criticism -- and one based on facts and observations -- is an "attack"?

I'm not a fan of high speed rail, but he has a point about the direction mass transit has taken in this country. I don't understand the outrage. Is it just based on reflexive umbrage by way of national pride?

I've always taken the ability to criticize my country as one of the things I like about being an American.
