Rebel leader Younes confirmed that pro-Gadhafi gunners downed the plane but that the pilot ejected safely.
And it's going to be a NATO intervention, which is backed by the Arab League, not just a US decision.

who are the good guys?
who are our allies?
what kind of state do the rebels wish to create?

Perhaps that's the benefit of this going through the UN, so we can say 'the world stands up'. It deprives Gadaffi of a propaganda victory in which he can say that just the US imperialists are attacking.
