The UK Daily Express newspaper is carrying a story of a Russian who has demonstrated telekinesis (sounds familiar) at the Moscow Institute of Physics.

36 yr old Vadim Kuzmenko was tested at the above facility, Professor Yuri Popov says "My colleagues and I do not have any doubts that he has this gift. We carefully monitiored his brain activity during tests. We scrupulously checked the test room for any magnetic or electrostatic or other hidden influences."

Kuzmenko achieved this physics defying feat by moving a....err....ping pong ball. The article states "Mr Kuzmenko first noticed his gift when he put a ball in a bowl of water, stared at it and silently ordered it to move."

Stop sniggering there! This could be "The One".

Expect numerous appearances on UK day-time TV, don't expect a concerted effort to claim the $million.

All Russian telekinetic and paranormal ability seems to strangely vanish from these people when they cross the Russian border to be tested anywhere else.

I want to be a Russian scientist. Seems like you only have to train for two, maybe three minutes in experimental procedure.

I wonder if the professor is:

this chap.

I will certainly be following the career of this claimant with eager expectation. I'm sure the testng is sure to go in an entirely different way to every other similar previous claimant.

Re: Article pic
I'd like to see a handful of polystyrene beads placed on that glass plate for starters.

Edit: Thanks for bringing the article to our attention, Stumpy.

Thanks Ashles, have just emailed this guy for more information regarding the protocols used and what (if anything!) was actually observed.

Edited to add: Will report back with any reply.

I can find no Yuri Popov listed at the Moscow Institute of Physics' website, moreover the university seems to be a educational faculty rather than a research centre.

There abilities don't disappear after leaving Russia.

I must say that I agree with jambo here. I mean, since the abilities weren't present to start with, they can't disappear, can they?

The US Military should be interested in this phenomena. It has obvious military applications:

Ping-pong ball is telekineticised into barrel of enemy tank gun so that when gun is fired, ping-pong ball blocks the round which explodes thus destroying enemy tank.

Any other applications for this phenomenal phenomenon?

So the glass panel doesn't even fully cover the tank?

And this is an experiment set up by Russia's "top experts" is it?

Jambo this is why you never hear of these people outside Russia.

They couldn't conduct a proper test of paranormal ability if their reputations depended on it.

Or these scientists ever existed in the first place (funny how they never seem to appear when you search for them or their papers).

You do hear of the people outside Russia.
Obviously, Mrs.Kulagina for instance is a very famous example of this - some consider her the most powerful psychic in recent history, she was tested by several foreign scientists eg Gaither Pratt of the university of Virginia, incidentally all found she was genuine.

Several Russian Parapsychologists are well known for their work eg LL Vasiliev & G Sergeyev.

I've now had a reply to my email to Prof Yuri Popov:

No, I was not involved in this testing, and I don't know anyone named Vadim Kuzmenko. Nor would I ever engage in any kind of testing of these "abilities" that are mostly like just a scam.

Best regards,
Yuri Popov, Ph.D.

I'm following up a couple of things about another Prof. Yuri Popov,
will try and make contact with him (and hope he speaks a language other than Russian).

References, please. Valid references. From reputable sources. If this is all true, this should be remarkably easy, shouldn't it.

Hooray! Jambo has added a new 'fact' to his claims about Ms. Kulagina.

But, hang on, would this be the same J. Gaither Pratt who was writing pro ESP books as far back as the nineteen thirties?
(there is some stuff about him on this page quite a way down)

Well what an unbiased researcher he must have been.

Perhaps we could read some of his actual experiments? You know, just to check how stringent they were.

Because obviously you have references for his studies.

It could feature in the Psychic Sports Channel. A table tennis match between two telekinesis proponents.

Obviously the rules would have to change (with no bats) and the control would be such that the ball would never hit the floor but it could become a judged event with style marks like in rhythmic gymnastics.

There could be crowd pleasing moves like sending the ball on a lap of the auditorium before bouncing on the table.

With a luminous ball in a dim auditorium the players could spell out their name in the air (like a sparkler).

You could add degrees of difficulty. Blindfolded perhaps ? Or perhaps they could bend a spoon at the same time.

Naturally the excitement of knowing who will win, as a result of the guest clairvoyant, could take the suspense out of the contest but the post match analysis could be excellent with guests like Isaac Newton (through mediums) commentating on the motion of the ball.

But as the presence of sceptical observers neutralizes psi abilities, we wouldn't be allowed in the stadium. Bah!

Are we allowed to watch the event later on video? Or is there a retroactive-experimenter/viewer effect which negates clauraudulent detection but regressively impacts telekinetic ping-pong ball interaction.

You know, because of Quantum Physics.

Wow! Looks like Yuri Popov is extremely psychic himself, he won't ' ever engage in any kind of testing of these "abilities" ..... he just knows it's a scam without research .......he has problably read CSICOP material .... he has the faith!

Let us prey ...... oops let us pray .....

Our CSICOP, who art in denial
Hallowed be thy magazine.
Thy opinions come
No more research needs done,
On UFOs and ghosts from heaven.
Give us our Occam and skeptic bread.
And conceal with science what PSI trespasses
As we discredit those that see physics against us.
And lead us not into proper PSI research,
But science us with psychologists instead,
For materialism is the kingdom,
and the power,
and the money,
for ever and ever.
Amen

I've just managed to offend both skeptics and religionists in one go :D ..... no mean feat! ;)
