Perhaps he is involved in scientific research which might actually help the world and further our knowledge rather than investigating these "paranormal abilities" - which might be a fun but apparently fruitless way to spend a scientific career.
I don't think assuming that a least "most" of these claims are scams is particularly unreasonable.
