New Jersey considers apology for slavery

Just about all the responses to the negative here have been jokes. Even a lot of conservatives in Australian take the issue of an apology to the Aboriginials in Australia seriously.

It's a different deal.

"New Jersey Considers Apology for Slavery"

Why? No one alive at or before the abolition of slavery in America is alive now. So the descendents of dead slave-owners are going to apologize to the descendents of dead slaves for something that no one alive had any part in? Again I ask, Why?

There is no one alive who needs to apologize for slavery, and no living former slaves to apologize to.

As for myself, I have never kept or "owned" any slaves, I am not responsible for an evil practice that ended about 85 years before I was born, and I will not be held accountable for the actions of others. Therefore, I have no slavery guilt to apologize for. Were I a New Jersey citizen, I would object to this waste of time and money.
Um why are you trying to apply logic and intelligence to the whole "race thing" - ?

You dinosaur.

If not an outright racist.

So really their should be an apology given to all people who suffer discrimination because of the colour of their skin. Compensation should also be given in order to end this discrimination.
I agree 1000%!!

For starters, I happen to know several white people denied a job because of "affirmative action" (or "diversity" if you prefer a hipper term) quotas (known only because an HR person confided in me - I'm sure they'll forgive me for blabbing, given the opportunity to make amends. Besides it's not like quotas are exactly some big secret). I doubt they really give a rat's ass about the apology, but back to this compensation thing...

I also know more than a few people (including myself) who have had to endure some of the most absurd and obnoxious behavior imaginable on countless occasions, but couldn't say a word because they were black, and of course if we did, we'd be immediately ostricized as "racists."

I take cashiers checks or money orders.

I'd like to apologise to the French for my country helping to save their country in WW2.

They've never forgiven us for it.
lol

I don't understand the anger over this.

I think the "apology" is condescending tripe. It means nothing to apologize for the crime if there are no living perpetrators or victims. My ancestors were forced to flee from Spain during the Inquisition, and I'm not expecting an apology from their current government any time soon.

However, since I don't live or pay taxes in NJ (I do visit from time to time), I agree with you that I don't need to get tied up in a knot about it.

Good thing you're not holding your breath. Them damn Egyptians still haven't settled with me for enslaving my ancestors.

I guess I have to apologise to the Romans, the Byzantines, the Germans, the Arabs, the Jewish people for the stuff we haven't apologised for, the Italians, the French, the Russians, the Germans, the Swiss, the Pope, the Austrians, the Czechs, the Slovaks, the Poles, the Lithuanians, the Spanish, the French, the Germans, the British, the Germans, the Lutherans, the Belgians, the Luxembourgers, the Dutch, the Danes, and I think that's it...

No.

No as in what? I don't have to apologise? Or no as in I haven't finished the list.

Besides now that I look at it I still have to add the Gauls and various African and Pacific Island tribes, and also the Chinese.

Do you mean the Hebrews? Since there's no evidence that they were ever held in bondage in Egypt (outside of the Old Testament), I think we can take it easy on the Egyptians. Maybe they should get a slap on the wrist, but we shouldn't make them apologize.
