New Jersey considers apology for slavery

So really their should be an apology given to all people who suffer discrimination because of the colour of their skin. Compensation should also be given in order to end this discrimination.

So if someone I don't know discriminates against you because of the color of your skin, I should pay you?

This may not be in the form of money.
What form then? A car? A fancy dinner? A Big Mac? My first-born?

:jaw-dropp
Wow. Just, like, wow...

May be hard to find one. Full disclosure I'm from N.J. never owned a slave, nor did my parents, nor their parents.

Tracing my family bact ot the civil war era and beyond I discovered that they were subsistance farmers livng a hand to mouth existence and they never owned slaves either. When I find a slave I'll tell him I'm sorry about what he's going through. Perhaps if I went to Chad I could find some slaves.

Oh, sorry, that motion didn't pass, but this one did:

"...profound regret for the state's role in Joe Piscopo and apologizes for the wrongs inflicted by Mr. Piscopo and his aftereffects in the United States of America"

Thanks! (And I mean it this time.) Now if they would just apologize for that Bon Jovi hairstyle craze of the 80's...

How about
- laws designed to end this discrimination.
- Specific education designed to end discrimination given both to the people who are discriminated against and the people who discriminate
- Facilities set up that in theory could be used by anyone, but are mainly used by certain groups.
- An apology for past discrimination
- An apology for current discrimination
- Many more things.

I am not talking about individuals paying or receiving money or other goods that can be bought with money (car? A fancy dinner? A Big Mac). Try to think of things that cannot easily be bought with money such as what I have listed above. Not sure how your first born could help.

My main point is that although slavery was abolished in USA (and other places) a long time ago the attitudes and other consequences of slavery still exist. This is what should be reduced eventually to zero.

Actually it partly does. The ancestors of many Americans had a functional society in Africa.

The functional society that functioned by selling these people to the muslim salve traders who sold them to the european and american slave traders?

What is your definition of a DISfunctional society?

None of the above, with the possible exception of the last, is "compensation," which is what you were claiming should be given.

Then you are not asking for compensation.

Try to think of things that cannot easily be bought with money such as what I have listed above.
Again, none of those items, except for the very vague last one, can remotely be considered "compensation".

Not sure how your first born could help.
I'm not, either, but it makes as much sense as demanding an apology from someone who has injured no one, to someone who has not been injured.

My main point is that although slavery was abolished in USA (and other places) a long time ago the attitudes and other consequences of slavery still exist. This is what should be reduced eventually to zero.
Yeah, well good luck with that. A tyrannosaurus squashed a butterfly one sunny day a hundred million years ago, and the consequences of that haven't been reduced to zero.

I'm not asking for much. I figure just one cent, earning interest at the rate of one percent per year, compounded annually, should cover it. It works out to $1,910,617,524,230,910. Make it an even two quadrillion and I'll throw in a surround-sound speaker system and a moon roof.

I'd like to apologise to the French for my country helping to save their country in WW2.

They've never forgiven us for it.

"New Jersey Considers Apology for Slavery"

Why? No one alive at or before the abolition of slavery in America is alive now. So the descendents of dead slave-owners are going to apologize to the descendents of dead slaves for something that no one alive had any part in? Again I ask, Why?

There is no one alive who needs to apologize for slavery, and no living former slaves to apologize to.

As for myself, I have never kept or "owned" any slaves, I am not responsible for an evil practice that ended about 85 years before I was born, and I will not be held accountable for the actions of others. Therefore, I have no slavery guilt to apologize for. Were I a New Jersey citizen, I would object to this waste of time and money.

Your first point does not apply to slaves in America, as the vast majority were not native Americans

The breakdown in society was similar. It takes a long time to build up a society, with sustainable conventions and practices. It takes very little time to shatter them. The ongoing racism is a direct hinderance to the reconstruction of something sustainable.

My ancestors were still living in Belgium when slavery existed in America. If we're gonna waste time and money on apologies by people who did nothing wrong to people who are no longer alive we might as well start preemptive apologies for anticipated future wrongs to people who aren't even born yet.
