New Jersey considers apology for slavery

"profound regret for the state's role in slavery and apologizes for the wrongs inflicted by slavery and its aftereffects in the United States of America,"

And,
"the vestiges of slavery are ever before African-American citizens, from the overt racism of hate groups to the subtle racism encountered when requesting health care, transacting business, buying a home, seeking quality public education and college admission, and enduring pretextual traffic stops and other indignities."

Is this an apology for slavery?

Me either. They must be going for the feel good vote - I assume that those the apology is directed at are smart enough to know to not fall for anything it implies beyond it's exact words.

We're over 100 billion in debt, shouldn't they be working on that? On second thought...

Now if only New Jersey would apologize for being New Jersey.

I got your apology right here.

We meant it, we're not sorry, and we'd do it again.

Ain't that right, Tony?

I'm going to take this opportunity to apologize for the Visigoths sacking Rome in 410.

I'm very sorry for that incident.

Australia still has not apologised for its treatment of its own native people. They were never slaves but until the 1950s (or maybe later? - see stolen generations) the country had a policy of genocide. It was not until 1967 that they were given almost equal rights, such as the right to be counted in the census. I means what is the point of counting people who are going to be made extinct soon?

Edit - Something else to look up White Australia Policy. Removed about 1972.

I wouldn't call the Stolen Generation part of a policy of genocide. Many of the children who were taken away were called "half caste" and that they threatened the "racial purity" of both the Aborigines and the Europeans. At the time they thought that full Aborigines would die out because they couldn't sustain themselves.

The problem is now that I will probably be called a "racist" or a "Nazi" because of what I have just written. Stupid touchy subjects.

To be fair though, the regular people in 1967 don't seem to have the same belief as the government. The '67 referendum received 90.77% of the vote. As well as that the referendum only allowed Aborigines to be counted in the census (repealed section 127 "In reckoning the numbers of the people of the Commonwealth, or of a State or other part of the Commonwealth, aboriginal natives shall not be counted.") and deleted "other than the aboriginal race in any State" from section 51.

I think the easiest way to describe the White Australia Policy would be (in a way that I think shows stupidity) as:

"OMG AZNS GONNA TAKE$ OUR LANDZ!!!!"

(Note the above could equally describe what Pauline Hanson thinks about immigration)

Ummm.... Thanks?
Oh, sorry, that motion didn't pass, but this one did:

"...profound regret for the state's role in Joe Piscopo and apologizes for the wrongs inflicted by Mr. Piscopo and his aftereffects in the United States of America"
