New England Skeptics Get-Together?

Activities at the next New England get-together

Hi everyone,
We've kayaked, walked by the seashore and done a jigsaw puzzle. Is there any interest to do something else at the next get-together? I'd love to get some gaming in with fellow skeptics, perhaps something educational like History of the World (AH version, not Hasbro), or Age of Renaissance or Tyranno Ex. Or maybe even challenging, like Advanced Squad Leader (even ASLSK if you're learning the game) or Star Fleet Battles (Captain's Edition rules).

Well, Jeff has suggested something this summer at Peacham Pond (Is that right Jeff?). Or is that too much water given that some of us at least will go from kyak and seashore to Bermuda Triangle? Jeff's pond offer is close at hand so I am not totally unbiased. But I'd be glad to lead a hike up a mountain for those so inclined (no pun intended).

er...so is this gettogeather going to happen er what?

if it helps: My parents have a big house near New Haven CT, which is kinda convient, because it's almost equdisant from Boston and NYC and is at the junction of 91 and 95.

New grill, multiroom stereo system, 1080p HDTV, two well behaved dogs. I'd go for a BBQ. Haven't asked their permission yet, but they've let me use the place for similar in the past. and even without their permission...i've done worse things than invite a couple dozen people over in the past and they haven't disowned me yet.

I'll pass. Had to bag it on the walk along the rocks, so a mountain is definitely out.
Yeah, my knees won't tolerate mountain climbing these days. Gentle rolling hills yeah, rocks - not so much. Also I'll be having back surgery in July so I'll be outta commission for that month at least. :(

Wowbagger's Photos Posted!

Hey, everyone! I had a good time up there, in Maine. I got back home safely, Sunday night. We should do this again, sometime. Perhaps somewhere closer to NYC. (Yes, I know about the "NYC Babes" event at the end of the month. But, perhaps we can do something half-way between NY and Maine.)

I posted low-res previews of the best photos I managed to take that weekend on this site:

Any help with the names I had forgotten would be helpful. Thanks!

We should probably state this explicitely:

Hey, Jeff?? YoPappa, Everyone??? When planning these little dos, try to remember some of us are old farts with various pieces that don't work so good, anymore.

I promise no strenuous activities will be required for the cruise.

As for planning an event up here, I have some personal issues that prevent me from hosting anything. This is a fairly recent development, and I'm sorry if I created anticipation for something I can't provide.

However, I'm happy to attend and help promote/plan an event if someone else is willing to host.

And thanks VERY much to YoPappa for hosting us all in Maine. Wells was wonderful, and the condos were perfect. It was well worth the drive.

And some of us would much rather challenge our brains than our muscles. I'll be hosting an event this summer, but it will be a Game Day that skeptics are invited to. The rules for some games can be explained before playing, but others can't. (Take a look at this introductory ASL game, with only a 12-page rulebook, http://www.multimanpublishing.com/ASL/prodaslsk1.php . I'm not going to spend an hour reading the rules aloud; people will have to buy their own copies and read the rules beforehand.)

what about where you are chip?

Ummmm, kinda far north (Heck, I can see a mountain that sits on the US/Canada border from here.) How about southern VT?- I still have some connections down that way and it's sure an easier drive for all of you except maybe Beady. Let me think on this.

I seem to be the outlier (outliar?). For me, Boston is 4.5 hours away, Portsmouth 5 hours, NYC 5.5, Albany 3.5, Montreal 1.5, Kingston 4.

If you look at the map (or check out the coordinates under my avatar), I'm in the far NW corner of Vermont, where it meets both Quebec and New York. I'm less than five miles from either one.

As a footnote to the Wells get-together...

The wedding was today (Tanja's friend). There is a flood watch out in this area, with over 2 inches having fallen today (up to 4 inches in localized areas, according to the news), with steady, torrential downpour at the time of the ceremony. Tanja and I went shopping this morning for her wedding gift--all roads on the seacoast were rivers this morning, and it has only rained harder since then. (The Atlantic, though, was beautiful as only the Atlantic during a storm can be.)

Tanja has been an absolutely delightful guest, and has been adopted as family by the Merc clan. The cats miss her already.

A quick hello from me. I flew into Heathrow this morning at 5.30, went home, had a quick shower and went to work. I am at work now and struggling to remember what I do for a living and why I do it. I did not manage to sleep on the plane at all (too uncomfortable and noisy) and the night before I slept maybe three hours, but I guess i was on a bit of adrenaline rush which is still keeping me awake.

My trip to the States was WONDERFUL, I loved everything about it - rain, jigsaw puzzles, seals, car trips, orange toasters and all. YoPopa, thanks so much for the condos, Wells was beautiful. I bet you are happy we did not go with the weekend after due to the weather. And of course, the Mercutio family were perfect hosts and I had plans to kidnap the lovely grey cat, but unfortunately did not have the right opportunity...

Slightly sad news for me is that the bride and the groom from the wedding I attended had to be evacuated from their flat (ok, condo) yesterday due to flooding. As far as I am aware it was preventative and they are hoping it will not actually flood, but what a start to a marriage, huh...

I will try to sort my photos tonight and will post some here as well.

It was great meeting you all! I hope I will have an opportunity to see you all again (well, if I had a million dollars ;) )

By the way, Chip, was it you who took a picture of me with the fireman in his red truck? I would love to have that photo.

This one by chance? (PM me with an e-mail address and I can send a slightly larger one)
