New book on Scientology: Going Clear

Lying is a religious ritual. Read Hubbard in his own words, and remember that within the church, Hubbard's words are absolute gospel.

"ENEMY SP Order. Fair game. May be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed."
- L. Ron Hubbard, Hubbard Communications Office Policy Letter, 18 October 1967

"THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN CONTROL PEOPLE IS TO LIE TO THEM. You can write that down in your book in great big letters. The only way you can control anybody is to lie to them."
- L. Ron Hubbard, "Off the Time Track," lecture of June 1952

"Handling truth is a touchy business ... Tell an acceptable truth."
- L. Ron Hubbard, The Missing Ingredient, 13 August 1970.

"THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN CONTROL PEOPLE IS TO LIE TO THEM. You can write that down in your book in great big letters. The only way you can control anybody is to lie to them."

...which is ironic, given that nobody in the Church believes that anybody in a position of authority within the Church is lying to them.

I don't think anyone is entirely clear until Scientology has cleared out their bank account.

I just ordered this for my Kindle.
Lawrence Wright has huge cred with me because of "The Looming Tower" (the best single book on the background of 9/11) and am looking forward to this one.
There has been some criticism since a lot of the book centers around Paul Haggis, the very sucessful screenwriter who for years was a faithful member of the COS, and then broke with them. IMHO I think taking a single person's journey into and his break with Scientology can tell you a lot more then just a bunch of statistics.

I would not be surprised if the power of blind belief and how destructive it can be...a major theme of "The Looming Tower" ..is also a big theme in "Going Clear".

Keep drinking the COS kool aid, buddy.
I note the incredibly cheap and obvious tactic of putting a unflattering photo of Wright on the cover.

You can tell a lot about a man by the enemies he makes. With Al Qaida and the CO$ both hating Wright,by respect for him is all the greater.

And, surprise, a number of "Customer Reviews" of the book are showing up at Amazon that read suspiciously like they were cut and pasted from that CO$ website attacking the book linked to earlier in this thread......

That's to be expected, and it just means the book is on the mark.

It's on the to-buy list for my kindle as well.

That's not true. Most marks have other assets that can be sold. Then the rubes can max out their credit cards to donate even more money to David's piggybank. After that, they should sign a billion year Sea Org contract.

True. I'm a fan of The Looming Tower, and I was a little surprised to see Wright's name on this. Good for him.

The author has been getting a lot of NPR attention... There was a Morning Edition segment today.
They recounted the tale of a young fellow who had been recruited years previously, and who actually moved to Hollywood and pursued and attained his dream of becoming a screenwriter and producer. All good.
Then, after sufficient display of faith and loyalty, he was allowed into the inner sanctum to read the words of L-Ron himself, the bits about Zenu and frozen aliens and all that....
He said that he realized right away that this was madness, and that he'd been duped long ago...... Yet, he stayed in the church for several more years.

Tax investigation by Xenu, the badguy ? Wasn't Hubbard in trouble with the IRS ?

Which makes it so interesting that he would call his brainwashing-interrogation-space alien exorcism ritual "auditing." He didn't so much hate Xenu as he wanted to assume Xenu's role as chief tormentor of humankind.

I wonder if things will get interesting when he goes on a book promotion tour?

Will he get to debate any of the cult's leading lights?

Jenna Miscavige Hill Pens Revealing Scientology Book

I caught a bit of The View on TV yesterday and they had Jenna Miscavige Hill talking about her new book.

To quote People Magazine:

In her memoir Beyond Belief Jenna Miscavige Hill describes her experiences at the Ranch, a San Jacinto, Calif., boarding school for children of Scientology execs. The niece of church head David Miscavige, she was raised away from her parents, then worked within Sea Org until leaving Scientology in 2005.

The Ladies of the View do not appear to be great lovers of the Church of $cumology.

How much longer the "Church" can exist without being laughed to death I don't know.

The CO$'s low Key Superbowl ad indicates that the church has decided on a "kinder, gentler" approach for the time being in response to the recent barrage of bad news for the church.
IMHO a greedy, scam ,dangerous, chuch with a Happy Face painted on it is still a greedy, scam, dangerous church.
Despite a new PR gimmick, the Super Adventure Club has not changed.

The fact that for the first time, many in Hollywood are now openly attacking the church has got to be worrying them. Looks as if Paul Haggis started a ball rolling.

It seems people are no longer as afraid of Scientology's litigious nature as they used to be.

Just a few years ago, Penn Jilette said he wanted to do an episode of BS! on Scientology but Showtime didn't want them to.

Are there any groups you won't go after?

We haven't tackled Scientology because Showtime doesn't want us to. Maybe they have deals with individual Scientologists –- I'm not sure. And we haven't tackled Islam because we have families.

This style of ad isn't a new thing. They've been putting them out there for ages.

I haven't read the book so can't comment upon any of the broad points. I would assume one's resource's for the broad points would be relevant to the validity of said points though I could be wrong as I haven't read the book in question.

Interesting point (I was in the Sea Org back in the eighties.)

Since I was provided room and board, etc. I never needed any sort of government assistance. I found it a bit amusing that I had more spending cash burning a hole in my pocket than I did in times before and after being in the Sea Org as a result of having all my necessities taken care of.

And on the topic of food...I could eat unlimited quantities of food as it was buffet style serving. So no need for food stamps.

Fred usual tactics to avoid direct questions are
1, Change the subject.
2. Make some innocuous remark that we can all agree on ( a particular CoS learnt tactic)
3. Direct you to read one of LRH's books or to a CoS "information" site.
4. Say he doesn't care as it doesn't affect him, he's never seen/experienced it so can't comment.
5. Play the "you can't diss my religious beliefs" card so anyone who criticises CoS is just a bigot

1,2,3 and 4 : Check!

After his work at the Village Voice Blog, it's worth checking out Tony Ortega's own blog with lots of updates and stuff
on you know what.
