I am very disgusted at Consevatives in America at the moment. Not least because on some fiscal issues and defense issues I would be considered a moderate conservative. No wonder a lot of conservatives call themselves "Libertarians".
Problem is the crazy relatives that the conservatives had kept locked in the attic except at election day have escapes and are running all over the house.

The problem I have with statements like this is that the last time conservatives were conservative instead of hard right was over 40 years ago. The fiscal issues you talk about the democrats are to the right of commies like Ike or Nixon after all.

That is what they learned from Watergate. Not "don't be scumbags" or "choose country over party" or "respect the news media". They learned to double down on hardcore loyalists and play to people's worst traits.


There was a prominent Republican at that time who said that they weren't going to beat the Democrats on facts (I really wish I could find his name again.). They needed to appeal to base emotions. This was the same time they jumped into bed with Jerry Falwell and the superChristians, who were perfectly happy to stay in their own little enclaves until the government started enforcing godless things like "civil rights" and taking a look at their tax exempt status.

Which made Republican positions God's positions. If you sided with Democrats, you were siding against God. Which goes a long way to explaining certain features of the modern Republican party.
