As for who is wealthy and who is not, anytime I'm feeling poor, I look at people I've met who are less well off. It's simple really. There are always people better off and less well off unless you are Bill Gates or one of those unfortunate 3rd world indigents. You can always compare yourself to those better off or those worse off. You get to choose.

All I need do to feel rich is to remember how it feels coming back from Mexico.

Last I checked, "3 figures" did mean > $99,000/US.

Where did you check? When I google it, I get lot's of references to the phrase "six figure salary" which is always described as anything greater than $100,000/year.

What! The number of figures is the count of digits in the whole number salary per year. In the days of the Yuppie, it was common to refer to a six-figure salary, which is anything over $100000.

Just by googling "3 figure salary", I get hits explaining a six-figure salary. This is the first hit:

With that definition, $99,000 is the top end of a 5-figure salary.

I gues Rasmus is right, ideas of "wealthy" can vary. My idea of wealthy is someone who owns a large house, has 2-3 expensive cars (I have a honda and a chevy), goes on frequent vacation (with the money to do so). I am not in that category...though I could be if I wanted to work 100h per week.
