will this help stop illegal immigration?

what would stop employers from simply not looking for these cards?

I mean, if an employer really wants to use illegal labor, they will simply pay them with cash, not report them to anyone. No National ID card can stop that.

Hell, I know someone who used to pick up illegals to do concrete work. $200 a day, cash. No payroll or any taxes paid. National ID card wouldn't mean **** to this guy, and the thousands of others who use illegals the same way.

Personally, I think this idea is a waste of time.

*Sits back and waits for the conspiracy nuts to crawl out of the woodwork*

You already have a Social Security card which is more than many countries have and that doesn't do any good. Basically including a picture on that gives you a national ID card ....and I dont think that will do a bit of good either.

Nothing will stop it outright.

It's called criminal liability. They could quickly and easily check whether or not the workers were legal.

Certainly. But it would happen less frequently.

It's another question if it's worth the expense and so on, but it would reduce the problem of illegal immigration and prosecution of those who make use of it.

um.....employers who hire illegals don't do any checks now. adding a picture to a SS card or creating a new worker ID card, won't change a damn thing.

like i said..just pay em' in cash..and nobody knows the wiser.

Forgers have proven to be remarkably clever when it comes to duplicating hard-to-duplicate documents...
They certainly have no trouble with driver's licenses; I would estimate that most all the students here have at least one...And they look pretty good, too.

I think it was 60 minutes that did a segment on getting a set of "papers" (DL, social security card, a few others) in border areas; it was remarkably fast and not particularly expensive.

And how many pass muster when a cop runs it?

E-Verify.

And guess what? In response to this, Illinois actually passed a law prohibiting employers from using E-Verify! It's currently tied up in the courts, as the DHS sued Illinois.

eta: To clarify, Illinois actually passed a law prohibiting employers from verifying the Social Security number of a prospective employee. So no, I don't see a national ID card happening any tome soon.

That is just crazy! Really unbelievable. This is the kind of stuff that drives people to vote the incumbents out.

The underground economy will always be there. Oh, and a national ID is just stupid.

Really? When I was a freshman in college at Arizona State (2004-2005), I knew exactly one person with a fake ID.

I have two national forms of identification--a social security card and a passport. Why not improve on what we have already (or just enforce the laws on the books) instead of introducing another useless (and costly) piece of paper?

The question is, would the benefits of a national ID card outweigh the risks and drawbacks? Many states have resisted "Real ID" partly because having each state's database being accessible to agencies in other states creates security vulnerabilities that the first state cannot control; one identity thief in Alabama, say, could steal information from every other state. I certainly don't think the purported problems of illegal immigration pose a greater threat to my economic well-being than having my credit rating trashed by several identity thieves.

what risks are the for National ID Cards?

i grew up with them. i alsways have to cary either passport or ID Card. for me that totaly normal and i see no risks at all.

From the UK perspective they were going to be ridiculously expensive to introduce and we already have passports and picture driving licenses.
