Think like a Marine general. Think about the fact that they considered the assault on Iwo Jima an acceptable risk. Actually, they didn't consider it a risk at all. They figured their chances of achieving their objective were near 100%. 28,000 casualties, 6800 dead, but the airfield eventually got built and the Stratofortresses drew a bead on mainland Japan.

OTOH, a Marine general would consider attacking Iwo Jima with a single battalion to be an unacceptable risk. He would figure he was just throwing away a battalion.

Risk is relative.

Sure, I'm a funny guy, but that Neller guy doesn't look like he'd be funny at all if some idiots pissed him off.

Trump better step down peacefully when he gets voted out. I don't think most of the generals like him at all. I'm pretty sure the real reason old Mad Dog Mattis resigned is because he knew he was about to run out of patience if he didn't get away from Trump.

Let's keep to the facts please.

1) There is no friggin' emergency. That is an outright lie.

2) There's no evidence Trump's wall will be effective. And lest anyone think it's obvious it will help, keep this in mind: The Democrats asked for a plan, where would the wall go. Then they would consider funding it.

3) But that's not what this is about. This is about Trump's pathological narcissism and we the taxpayers are funding his follies.

After that, there are plenty of discussions to be had about undocumented immigration and visa overstaying vs the employers who are lobbying to keep immigrants working while underpaying them, and the people who have been living here for decades, and the people who really do need asylum from violence in their home countries.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out why Mattis took the job in the first place. There was no chance he thought Trump was a heckuva guy and a great commander in chief.

I thought Mexico was helping. U.S. demand for drugs and exploitable labor is the draw. That's what drives the "need" for some kind of wall.

Bashing Mexico is not going to help him politically IMO.

It helps him with his base, which is all he cares about. The base is all that the Republicans care about, this is because they have de-fanged the voting rights act to such a point that opposition parties would have to win the popular vote by over 10% now (my ballpark guess.)

I guess it's not testable, unlike strictest immigration laws.

When I was in Europe, I drove from Switzerland into Germany without stopping at the border. No fence, no wall, no gate or even a person.

Now, when I went back into Switzerlad, I got stopped by border patrol. He looked at my passport and asked where I was going. I said, "The airport" and he waved me on.

I had a hell of a lot harder time getting into Canada. He asked me about the subject of the conference I was going to and what I was going there for. Man, that guy was tough.

It has been many years since I have been down on the actual border, but what it meant back then was that they allowed every teenager and young adult across the border to blow money on drinking cheap beer. They didn't even ask if you had enough money for the chiclet kids. On the way back the US would at least ask to see an ID. Occasionally.

It's not relevant. Neither is Trump claiming he's considering shutting the border (notice the "considering"). Every bit of that is Trump bravado and his base eats it up.

Or just closing "large sections" of the border, you know, where there are no crossings so it doesn't impact trade.

Mexico must use its very strong immigration laws to stop the many thousands of people trying to get into the USA. Our detention areas are maxed out & we will take no more illegals. Next step is to close the Border! This will also help us with stopping the Drug flow from Mexico!

It would be so easy to fix our weak and very stupid Democrat inspired immigration laws. In less than one hour, and then a vote, the problem would be solved. But the Dems don’t care about the crime, they don’t want any victory for Trump and the Republicans, even if good for USA!

It is all he cares about, but I don't think his base is going to be enough.

I could be wrong.

I wonder what good he thinks "closing the border" will do, since he can only close ports of entry. Sounds tough I guess.
