Mormons Can't Use the Internet?

I spoke with my Mormon nieghbor (who is, IMO, strict-e.g. no sleevless shirts for the women in her family). They rent movies from a "safe" place that edits out all the good stuff so I thought they might be good to ask.

It turns out that, as many of you have pointed out, it is not an anti-tech thing. It is a censorship thing.

The non-internet Mormon use email, but have no web connection period.

Theoretically, all Mormon men are required to go on a mission around the age of 18. Some don't, but you are supposed to

I cannot tell you how many assume the missionary position. When I was a teenage boy in the church, far too few of the girls were willling to assum it (or any other position) for my taste, that much I CAN tell you.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience.

Thinking about it, not one Mormon has come calling since that incident almost 9 years ago. Is there a "Do Not Call" list?

You don't pay attention very well do you. Every Mormon I know, and there are many, have the Internet and surf the web. Including my father who is a High Priest (not as important as it sounds), my brother in law who is a Bishop and my other brother in law who is an Elder's Quorum President.

As has been pointed out to you there are many, many Mormon web sites, including forums and chat rooms and of course the Mormon's own site. www.lds.org

Edited to add, perhaps it was I who did not pay attention. If you are saying that some members are "non-internet" and eschew it then you are correct and my appology.

I can't remember for sure. It seems like there was one of sorts but we did not refer to it when going door to door. Perhaps things have changed but it would seem difficult to implement.

Well I guess that makes me a Mor(m)on. Oh well, less than half of eligible males go. Women aren't expected to go but a number of them do.

Be calm, my friend.

Your apology is accepted. I had a question about Mormonism that my neighbor was able to answer, but I brought it here because I knew how intelligent, well-read, and patient the posters on this forum are.

Thanks for all the posts.

Really!?! Antedotally, this seems very, very low to me. What is your population you're including. If you're including everyone that is in a given stake directory, then I agree. At least in our directory, they include anyone who has any mormon connection. They even include me!;) I would say about half are not active. However, if you just include the "active" members it seems like it would be substantially higher.

Women aren't expected to go but a number of them do.

And, married couples can go together as well. I believe any card carrying member can go on a, and as many, mission(s) as they choose.

Some Mormons tend to incorporate their eccenticities into their religion and, as long as they don't go outside the religion's norms, they are tolerated.

My brother in laws wife will not allow him to watch TV on sundays. He's a big sports fan. She says it is "irreverant". Of course he wasn't informed of this rule until the day after they were married!! (sucker!)

This is true. I knew an older couple who planned to go on a mission after they both retired.

Ahhhh....NO!

Having served a two year mission I can tell you that while it is close it isn't quite right. Missionaries carry a small book of rules wherever they go. This is known colloquially as the white bible, well informally that is what it is known as. I still have mine though it is at my mother's house in Utah with all of my other mission paraphernalia..

The rules forbid the riding in the backs of trucks, operating fire arms, and other activities that would increase the risk of harm. Swimming is included.

The "magic underware" is allowed to be left at home when engaged in activities such as basket ball and Doctors visits though it is encouraged. Missionaries have Monday off. This is known as preparation day and depending on the activity Missionaries do not wear Whites (white shirt, dress slacks and tie). I rarely wore whites on monday.

Ah, I will bow to your authority. I forgot about the Monday's off. It has been a few years.

I don't think it is required, but it is definitely expected. Girls on the other had are not permitted to go on a mission until they are 21. And it is not actively encouraged for girls to go on a mission. Heck, by 21, those good Mormon girls should be pregnant with at least their first child and possibly their second. :D

I had to threaten to call the police on a couple of those representitives of the church once. It has made me very distrustful of them ever since then.

Why?

They cam to my house one day, and told me they had spoken to husband the previous Wednesday, and he wanted them to come back to speak with them some more. I knew they were mistaken for two reasons. One, my husband is Buddhist. More importantly, the Wednesday in question we were at the hospital all day giving birth to our youngest son. Actually I was giving birth, but he was there too. From 7:00 a.m. to almost midnight. I politely told them they were wrong. But they continued to come back, every couple of weeks getting more and more insistent that they were going to speak to my husband. I was getting pretty nervous by this time. Then one day, they came up the walk and I grabbed my portable phone and met them at the door. One of them grabbed my screen door and tried to force his way into my house (he didn't succeed, the screen door was locked). That's when I threatened them with the police. I was very scared. Home by myself with three young children and some really angry guy trying to bust his way in. Like that attitude is going to convert me to their religion.

Like I said, I don't get any Mormons anymore, and really get fewer proselytizers of other denominations since I placed the large Buddha sculpture in my front garden.

If Mormons use the internet at night is that a nocturnal e-mission? ;)
