• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.
On what basis would you question the veracity of a statement made by an expert in DNA sequencing?

I base it on the fact that many Bigfoot hairs, most which are biological, have failed to yield any usable DNA, compared to scat and blood.

Remember monsterquest? Disotell could not extract the dna out of the hair due to not discarding the Inhibitor. Nelson had no problem identifying the blood when he Looked for DNA in it, due to the fact that he removed the inhibitor.

Well - as Disotell pointed out, having the evidence contaminated does NOT mean that he couldn't find Bigfoot DNA if it was in there. In fact, it sounds pretty easy. If they got the DNA - which would certainly be in the feces or blood (and possibly hair) if it were collected as a fairly new sample - then his lab could tell which part of the sample was a human contaminant and which was unknown primate. (or Giant Sloth or Bear or whatever...)

That was something I learned. Contaminated DNA evidence of Bigfoot is not worthless. But to date none of the samples have had any mystery primate in them.

What blew me away was how advanced the technology has become. When he was discussing having the entire genomes of humans, chimps, gorillas, mice, rats, sheep, and most for orangutans on his laptop I was like...

:jaw-dropp

It really drove home for me that there is absolutely nothing out there either to the knowledge of Disotell or Meldrum that could be even considered "maybe Bigfoot".

Yeah - I had a bit of a nerd-gasm on that too. 3 - 15 minutes to compare a sample to every known animal we have a genome for (even partials).

Yowzah.

I am not so sure about Meldrum. Henner Fahrenbach, who has worked with Meldrum concerning hair, has stated that Meldrum has said to have come across unknown hair samples.

If you would like to reach Fahrenbach, you can either IM him on Hennerf or contact him at HennerF@aol.com

Well, that's a pretty stupid thing to do, isn't it? 18 year old kid questions the veracity of NYU genetic sequencing expert and anthropologist, Prof. Todd Disotell's assertaion that with the current technology DNA can be extracted from hair missing a root roughly 50% of the time because of the fact that some alleged Bigfoot hairs have failed to yield usable DNA.

Kind of makes you look really, really silly, doesn't it?

Remember the part of the show you said you just listened to where the MQ episode with Disotell and Nelson was played back for Disotell's commentary? You know, the part where he asked "How to be polite?" and proceeded to explain exactly what happened in detail? Apparently not.

Very much

I did not catch that, due to the fact I stopped listening to it after 30 minutes.

And that even partials could be verified by comparing to different sections of the genome for confirmation.

The big thing that the show dispelled was the thing that has been chucked around by footers where they said Nelson's findings seemed to indicate Bigfoot when they showed nothing other than completely modern human. The point where you guys replayed Nelson boldly announcing that he now thinks he may have sasquatch DNA just had me shaking my head. Disotell stressed that were talking about variation on the level of Doctor Atlantis and kitakaze, not on the order of genera.

I appreciate the summary you did at the top. Very nice.

I was torn about whether to edit down Disotell to "sound bytes" - but I just found his talk fascinating.

Err... is that Fahrenbach's personal email?

Thanks and yeah, I agree that bringing it down to snippets sort of defeats the purpose. It's the whole discussion that needs to be heard. I went from not being quite sure what to make of Disotell to completely understanding where he was coming from, what his position was regarding Bigfoot, various evidence claims, and hypotheses. I also found that I might have thought he was a bit of a weirdo before and now I think he's a very cool and interesting scientist.

It's like you could go watch a Motorhead show with him and drink 8 pints and then he'd stumble up and say "gotta... primatological... polymerase... cat food... morning" *belch* And the next day he'd be drinking coffee and going over gene sequences for gibbons.

IOW, I learned some very good things and you guys made it happen.

Yes, it does matter. You wouldn't like it if I posted your phone number, right? It looks like you're posting someone's email address without permission and that's not very cool, is it?

I have spoken with him, and he has no problem with questions people may have concerning bigfoot.

Sweet baby Jesus on burnt toast, I have really had enough of this...

Little mak, do you realize how tiring this gets? Do you have any idea how lame it gets when you come and lay these big stinky dumps right in the middle of detailed and intelligent conversations among adults? Holy crap, would you just reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad what is in front of you before you whip your shorts down and let fly? Look at this, little mak. Look above at the way you quoted me and below at what you left out that quote:

I am telling you this not as a personal attack but as someone whose been very patient with you, given you positive advice both in PM and in-thread, and tolerated your flailing, by your own admission sometimes drunken, behaviour. You are acting like an idiot. I'm not saying you are an idiot. But here on the JREF you certainly act like one. Not just an idiot but a lazy idiot. A jackass, a fool, a moron, or an imbecile. Any word you choose to appropriately convey to you that when you flail, drink and post, read tiny snippets of posts and then tommygun spray replies that you didn't spend any time thinking about longer than the moment it popped up in your head, that it makes you look very foolish, lazy, and very much a nuisance.

Is that why you're here? To be a nuisance? Do you want hundreds of people thinking you are an idiot and an irritation? I don't think so but that is exactly what is happening. Think about this now - everytime someone sees the handle "makaya325", they expect idiocy. They expect high frequency flatulence. You told me before that you want try and make positive contributions and gain some respect. You are doing the complete and exact opposite. You are flouting every bit of advice I've given you and insisted on acting foolish and lazy.

I'm am telling you this now and now only, little mak. I have never put anyone on ignore. Not Sweaty, not Lyndon, not log, not Creekfreak, not historian. You are going to be the first. You are going to be the very first person in over three years of my time at JREF that I put on ignore. It will not be because you are rude or foul. I can handle that. I will put you on ignore because of the sidetracking and flailing stupidity and laziness that is in your posts. You post like a 16 year old girl with a cell phone, you can't quote to save your life, you couldn't read your way out of a airplane washroom, and you write like you use alphabet fridge magnets for reference. I'm not kidding, I got an email from a Nigerian scammer yesterday that was written better than your posts.

I don't think this is the way you want to go. I'm telling you once and once only. One more fart post where you have clearly not read what the person wrote to whom you are responding and you will no longer exist to me. I will see nothing but your handle and not your posts and I will be glad I do not have to read garbage posts or expend another single second of effort trying to help someone who inssist on acting like an idiot and refusing to make any personal growth.

Got it? One warning, that's it, and then you can enjoy the attentions of only those who haven't been as patient as I.

Got it

DUDE! Makaya is the 1st person I have considered ignoring too. On all forums!, not just JREF. It's not that he is nasty or rude, just that he is so lost that he can't help but derail a thread. I've actually pushed the ignore button for the first time in my life, but cancelled it as it was running the process.
