Mike Huckabee and the war on women

"If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it," Huckabee said. "Let's take that discussion all across America."

What a doofus.

Based on the quote in the OP, it seems like Huckabee's slogan would probably be something more like "stop letting the Democratic party treat you like disabled whores, vote Republican".

Except that's all Huckabee's own weird twisted disturbing idea, and has nothing to do with either Democrats or birth control being covered by insurance.

You know, I can't even respond to the subject of the OP within the confines of the rules here.

What a jerk.

I'd say Mike Huckabee is an assclown, but it would be an insult to assclowns.

No Republican of import will speak out against this. They are enthralled to the true believers of this sentiment. Already the responses have been along the lines of agreeing with Huckabee's message but regretting his unfortunate turn of phrase.

But here's the problem with that. The inescapable logic of Huckabee's bizarre rant is that women use birth control because they can't control their libido. He said this in the context of trying to make a funny about how Democrats are narrowing the conversation to this contraception issue. But it's Republicans who have made contraception an issue, not Dems. And Dems are fighting back. It's Huckabee who brought the subject of libido into it, not Dems.

This weird behavior is not going to stop. The Huckabee wing of the party is still in the driver's seat. They are going to continue to repel woman voters because people like him are true believers.

Love it!

Really? It seems pretty escapable to me.

Huckabee's bizarre rant seems to be agnostic about the reasons women use birth control. Instead, his thesis seems to be that Democrats assume that women can't control their libido, and therefore it's incumbent on the state to provide them with free birth control, in order to save them from themselves, and mitigate their impact on society as a whole.

I'm wide open to the argument that Huckabee is wrong about what Democrats believe on this policy issue. But the transcript I've seen doesn't convince me there's a reasonable argument that he's a crypto-misogynist.

Who said anything about crypto?

eta:
Or if you would prefer, he's saying, "Women who support the Democrats on this birth-control issue are entitled whores."

Here's the argument. Democrats have never brought anyone's libido into this discussion about insurance coverage for contraception. All they have argued for is that contraception be guaranteed to be available through women's health insurance policies. That's it. It's Huckabee who adds that because of this Dems want women to believe that, "they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government." Huckabee is the one and only party making the direct connection between use of birth control and uncontrollable libidos.

Dems: We want women to have access to birth control through insurance.
Huckabee: Dems want women to think that they can't control their libidos... because women using birth control can't control their libidos(?)

It's entirely his leap in logic. He owns it.

Remember Rush's comment about Sandra Fluke, that she "was having so much sex" she "couldn't afford birth control." I don't think they have any clue how birth control works...

If you delete the snark and the supposition that women having sex when they want to is bad, and a few other odd ball jerky claims, then he is really just saying "If the Dems want the government to provide birth control to women, then so be it.":D "Let's take that discussion all across America."

I had to read it several times, because logic is so twisty turny that it is just nonsense.

Oh yes, that's a choice one. Hasn't Rush ever known any woman who used oral birth control? He doesn't seem know to know that prescribed to be taken with the same regularity regardless of how often you are having sex, and in cases where it's prescribed for other purposes (Endometriosis, PMS, heavy flow), having nothing to do with sex at all.

Huckabee suffers from the same horrible ignorance, or feigned ignorance, which is worse -- because it's in-correctable and indicative of a big fat phony.

I read that at first, but after abridging the overly nested clauses, it reads as:
""If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe [statement they believe in], then so be it," Huckabee said. "Let's take that discussion all across America."

Don't ignore the subtle insult: that women are so stupid that they will blindly believe some nonsense that Huckabee made up.

Here's the argument. Democrats have never brought anyone's libido into this discussion about insurance coverage for contraception.

Which is an argument for why Huckabee is wrong about what Democrats think. But it's not an argument for Huckabee thinking women can't control their libidos.

Given how often I've been informed of what my unspoken motivations are by my opponents, though, I'm not feeling all that sympathetic to the complaint that Huckabee is doing it.

So we've established that the GOP can't get its true believers to curb their crazy tongues, but I am wondering if Roger Ailes (and Rupert Murdoch) will ever take an interest in at least curbing the most damaging excesses of his own employees, in the interest of winning elections.

Here's Jon Scott, Fox News host, as regards Texas Gov candidate Wendy Davis:

The suggestion that she pulled herself up by her stilettos and made it through Harvard Law School doesn't exactly jive with the fact that her husband, her then-husband, paid for it all, then as soon as it's all paid for, she left him, and he got custody of the two girls.
