Midwestern Skeptic's Meeting? Chicago?

Weekend.

I'm thinking weekend.

March or April?

There are several good weekends in either. March 18th comes to mind.

Venue?

Abdul? Any thoughts?(or anyone else..jump right on in, the water's fine.)

clarsct: Any weekend March or April looks OK to me.

Venue should be inexpensive.

Since this is unofficial, do we just all show up and not bother about reservations?

Or do we take pre-attendance through PMs?

Or something else?

I won't be drinking, BTW.

I think what Abdul is saying is the price should not be prohibitive of people coming in. I suppose we could meet somewhere pricey..but I wouldn't want to do so at the expense of excluding folks.

Downtown Chicago isn't my briar patch. I'm hoping to get a suggestion from someone who knows more than I.

Any good hangouts? Blues/Jazz bars? Etc?

there is a restaurant in the house of blues. havent been there but i hear its good.

navy pier also offers a host of excellent restaurants, one of which is a live jazz club with GREAT food.

there is also famous chicago pizza at places like giordanos, ginos east, lou malnatis, unos, etc.

I agree. Which is why I am looking for parameters. I'm not looking to meet at a 4 star restaurant, but at the same time I don't want to meet at TGI Fridays either. A bar with decent food would be ok, as long as there is no band or anything. Doesn't make for good conversation. Or we could hit a restaurant and then a bar after, since most restaurants wouldn't want us to occupy a table for 3 hours.

A Jazz bar is out, since most I have ever been to are cabaret seating, i.e. you're there to listen and not talk.

I've been to other HOBs. They food is basically TGI Fridays.

See my remarks about a Jazz club.

Pizza!!! Since this is one of the things Chicago is known for, I think that is a great idea!

well my personal fav is lou malnatis, but it isnt equipped to handle large crowds. girdanos and ginos definitely handle large crowds, and ive never been to unos so ill have to defer on that one.

Girdanos or Ginos?

Sounds good. I guess I'll have to do some googling, unless someone else has a defintive preference?

I say good to either of those choices.

How much planning necessary once the place, date and time are set?

My suggestion is the Berghoff. Right in the Loop area, and walking distance from everything cool (Art institute, etc). Great German restaurant with their own house beer. Amazing stuff, but that's because I eat pizza too much around here.

berghoffs is permanently closing at the end of february. :(

Perhaps in the evening, we can come and watch you play!

What, and have me be on the clock as the performing monkey while everyone else gets to talk and drink and be merry? Forget it! Besides which, none of the places I play regularly would be conducive to a hang-out.

However, a Gino's or Giordano's would be sweet.

I'm talking about after the talking and drinking and merrying and hanging out. Go and listen to some tunes. Jazz, I assume?

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! :cry1
The restaurant is closing. The bar will remain open, there's a lot of confusion about that.

I'd offer suggestions, but I'm hardly ever downtown. There's good restaurants in Greek Town, just outside of downtown. And of course Lincoln Park and Lakeview are packed w/ restaurants and bars, and are really the center of night life in this town. Downtown is for the rubes tourists. :boxedin:

Well, since the Berghoff appears to be out, I'll take just about anything the rest of you can agree on. Greektown's a good idea. My favorite places are Wrigleyville and Chinatown, but that's because I love asian food. I'd be up for just about anything.
