What really made it hilarious for me was, when the audience began laughing, Bachmann turned to them beaming. She thought they were laughing with her!

That's a pretty common argument from certain sectors: since it doesn't literally say "seperation of church and state" the establishment clause doesn't mean anything useful.

Unless we're talking about taxing churches. Then the interpretation is very clear, "state can't mess with church". Vice versa seems okay.

Other than I don't think the people who try to play that particular 'gotcha' game are logically consistent, sometimes I think the only thing they think it means is that the government can't "establish" a religion so being christian is ok because, to many of them, christianity established the US, not the other way around. But I admit I only have the barest idea of what passes for logical thought to people like that.

Thank god for semantics.

When a congregant from the Danbury Baptists was confused by the wording in the first Amendment he sent a letter (you can read that letter here) to one of the people who played a huge part in contributing to the constitution it to get clarification. That person was Jefferson and this was his reply.

..."make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State

Are we clear? Obviously she was semantically correct but obviously hasn't a clue as to the founders intent. She deserve derision, scorn and laughter. Hell, she was on the Intelligence Committee and doesn't even understand the intent of the founders.

I'm laughing at her.

The intent is clear. Government and religion are separate things. Religious people can rely on their beliefs in forming policy and voting. What they cannot do is use government to foist their superstitions on everyone else (I'm also looking at you Mr. (pray for rain) Perry.
